Charley says LIST! If You’re Only Just Joining Us

May 26, 2010

I am very excited to have gotten a mention on Don’t Stop The Pop‘s ‘Blog Love‘!

I’ve been reading DSTP for a while now. It’s the blog that introduced me to Agnes, Elouise and Pauline, to name just a few acts. It’s also the blog that I hope I can achieve the same level of ongoing quality as.

For those of you who’ve now come here for the first time, be it thanks to DSTP or for any other reason, I wanted to fill you in on what I’ve been doing these last few months.

Over the last few days I’ve been posting the eight parts of Oslo 2010 In A Tweet, a Eurovision review which I’ve absolutely loved doing with my equally as ESC obsessed friends MadeInHeaven and Greg Baker.

However, these posts have left this page a bit clogged up. So without further ado, here’s a sample of what you’ll find beyond the first page of Charley says POP!

Why: I think Axeela might just be the next big popstar from Belgium.

Charley says LIST! Ke$ha: The Clone Wars
[http://tinyurl.com/34mjt5e]
Why: This post got picked up by StumbleUpon, it’s an introduction to some great lesser known pop acts who may have been a little influenced by the current Ke$ha craze.

Charley says SONG! Glamm – Overheated
[http://tinyurl.com/32snq2c]
Why: I love talent show acts and former popstars who decide to give it another go. Especially if the result is as good as this ‘Evacuate The Dancefloor’ sounding pop tune.

Charley says VIDEO! Cinérex – Bring Up The Sun
[http://tinyurl.com/38ooyyb]
Why: It’s fun to piece together information about a brilliant act that seemed to have gone unnoticed by the internet. It took me some time to collect all the facts, but this is one of my favourite posts.

Charley says ARTIST! Harel Skaat
[http://tinyurl.com/ybbwx93]
Why: You may have noticed that this blog has extra attention for, as DSTP put it, Benelux Pop. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t like to discover artists from all over the globe. A perfect example is this post I wrote on this year’s Israeli Eurovision contestant Harel Skaat.

Charley says WEEK!
Why: Since a couple of weeks I do a roundup on Sunday of all the posts I put up in the last seven days. Accompanied by a video that hasn’t yet made it on the blog, it’s a nice way to catch up with the pop you may have missed.

I hope that you have may have found something you like on Charley says POP! I’ve got some exciting stuff planned for the blog, so I hope that you come back soon. For those of you who have already been reading along these last months, I hope you keep coming back!

Thank you for visiting!

Charley says ARTIST! Yasmina Karraz aka Yazzmin

May 24, 2010

As far as wasted opportunities in Belgian pop go, Yasmina Karraz is a prime example.

Aged 19 Yasmina entered Eurosong 2002 in a bid to represent Belgium in Tallinn. ‘Take This Heart‘ took Flanders by storm. Yasmina was hailed as a new Alicia Keys and despite ending third behind Sergio & The Ladies and Spark her Eurovision entry climbed its way up to number 8 in the charts.

The ballad isn’t up on YouTube, but you can hear a sample of it on the Ultratop website or listen to the full thing on Grooveshark.

Big things were expected from this young singer. An album was planned and it looked like Yasmina would kickstart the Flemish R&B scene, but then… nothing.

After a couple of years wheels were finally getting set into motion. In 2004 Yasmina provided backing vocals on ‘Same Tears‘, an indie album track by rapper Krewcial. The laidback hiphop tune was an ode to his grandfather who had passed away. Yasmina was also involved with The Incredible Time Machine, singing on their charity single ‘People Have The Power‘.

2005 saw the rise of Chocolate Nation, a Flemish R&B collective fronted by Leki, Hadise and record label Mostiko. A new Yasmina song, ‘Song 4 You‘, can be found on a compilation themed around this. The Chocolate Nation album must be nearly impossibe to find these days, but you can hear the song online.

That year also saw the first appearence of the new moniker under which she would be releasing music. As Yazzmin she sang the chorus on ‘No Matter What‘ from Leki’s ‘Warrior Girl‘ album.

A full-on Yazzmin launch was planned for 2006, with even a rumoured return to the Eurosong stage. Unfortunately, Yasmina decided to pull the plug on the project for personal reasons.

She hasn’t been in the public eye since.

Shame.

2012 edit: Since posting this blog, some links are no longer working. “Take This Heart” has however been uploaded onto YouTube by some kind soul. Enjoy it while it’s still there!

Charley says WEEK! 2010.20

May 23, 2010

I was originally going to post ‘Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi‘ by Celine Dion, but since this blog has already been very Eurovision-y over the last few days I ended up choosing Lolo Ferrari’s debut single ‘Airbag Generation‘. It’s questionable if she was doing any of the vocals, but that didn’t stop her from having a couple of tracks out there. ‘Dance Dance Dance‘ is up on YouTube as well, while ‘Set Me Free’ and a cover of ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ should also exist. The tragic Eurotrash icon sadly passed away in 2000.

Charley says TV! Looking For Pearl

May 22, 2010

Colour me super excited.

Music station JIM has announced that a follow-up for talent show ‘Let’s Go Lasgo’ will be airing this summer!

In 2008 Lasgo producer Peter Luts set out to find a new singer for the early 00’s hit dance project. Two years, three top five hits, one top ten album and a ‘Dancing With The Stars‘ participation later, ‘Let’s Go Lasgo’ winner Jelle Van Dael is one of the hottest celebrities out there and Lasgo is bigger than ever.

In ‘Looking For Pearl’ Peter will be putting together an entirely new act, consisting of one singer and two dancers.

As far as I understand the group will be named Pearl, after main sponsor Tampax’ product line. With also The Saturdays promoting them in the UK, these must be the world’s most music friendly tampons ever.

Except for the vocals, Pearl’s first single is completely ready and good to go. It looks like it might be a proper club banger of ‘Gone‘ proportions. Even with only the instrumental finished the track got signed all over Europe and the US.

Girls between 17 and 24 can apply as of Monday the 24th on www.jim.be. Participants must be free from June 28th till July 12th for the show which will be hosted by popstar and tv host Ellektra.

I can’t wait!

Charley says SONG! Katia Berlingieri – I Will Survive

May 22, 2010

Ok, is it just me or does the middle drag queen in the background have the most amazing hat ever? I bet Cher is ordering one as we speak.

The singer in the front is Katia Berlingieri, by the way. She tried out for Eurovision in 2004 with ‘Don’t Be Scared’ and came 10th in Flemish Star Academy 2005, the show that gave us the amazing Katerine Avgoustakis. Since then Katia has released ‘Music Makes Me‘, a collaboration with DJ Werner.
