Charley says ARTIST! Jo Hens

June 30, 2010

Jo Hens is the new VJ on Belgian TMF.

Most of the articles on this subject do mention how he’s an actor on soap opera ‘Familie’. He plays Niko, a member of fictional band The Project. (Not to be confused with the TMF talent show of the same name)

Some of the stuff that’s written also say how he’s into music and playing in some bands, but what none of them seem to remember is how only last year he had a solo single out. ‘Anne‘ was a pleasant breasy summer tune and the theme to new digital tv channel Anne. The song was an adaptation of Dutch ‘So You Wannabe A Popstar’ heartthrob Tim Douwsma’s ‘Ga‘.

Oh, and rewatching the video just now, I’m pretty sure the love interest in it is model and former LibertyTV host An Jaspers!

Charley says COVER! I’m In Love

June 29, 2010

When listening to 2009 Eurovision winner Alexander Rybak’s new album ‘No Boundaries’ you might stumble upon a song that sounds familiar.

Most of you may know ‘I’m In Love’ as a Fabrizio Faniello track. The Maltese 2001 Eurovision entry had a bit of an international hit with the song  in 2004.

However, the original and my personal favourite version was done by John The Whistler all the way back in 2000. The man behind this project was Umberto Carli. He was born in Africa and apparently moved to Belgium at one point. An album called ‘It’s Crazy’ was released, but ‘I’m In Love’ seems to be his only big hit. The most recent thing I could find on him was a participation at Cyprus’ 2006 national Eurovision final.

Alexander Rybak’s version strangely leaves out the whistling, replacing it with some female backing vocals. I’m not particularly fond of his version, although that could also be because I’m still trying to figure out whether I think his ‘Oah‘ video is unnervingly incredible or just incredibly unnerving.

“People think what I’m doing is a little strange”

Yesterday I posted the first part of my talk with Susanna Kay, the new popstar whose ‘Off The Hook‘ is one of the best pop tunes to come out of The Netherlands this year.

Today we bring you a download for Dutch pop lovers and part two of the Susanna Kay interview where we talked about fashion, what’s next musically and Susanna’s academical research on pop!

Charley says WEEK! 2010.25

Whatever happened to Spooks, best known for their 2001 hits ‘Things I’ve Seen‘ and ‘Karma Hotel‘?

Well, as it turns out they had another album in 2003, but the group disbanded shortly after former member Water Water died in a car accident. Lead singer Ming-Xia is still putting that unique voice to good use working on solo material. Last year she sang on Jurassic 5 frontman Chali 2na’s ‘4 Be Be’ from his debut album ‘Fish Outta Water’.

Charley says INTERVIEW! Susanna Kay

June 27, 2010

“P!nk and Katy Perry aren’t rock singers either”

Earlier this week I introduced you to Susanna Kay, my favourite new Dutch popstar.

Her debut single ‘Off The Hook‘ is brilliant pop smoothly produced by DEEKAY, with a great looking video to go with it.

I had a talk with the lovely Susanna where we discussed music, dancing, pop and how P!nk and Katy Perry aren’t rock singers.

Check out the interview, after the jump!

Charley says SONG! Yasmine – Ik Was Zo Graag Bij Jou Gebleven (Is This What I Get For Loving You?)

June 25, 2010

While most blogs out there are remembering Michael Jackson’s passing away, let us look back on Flemish singer Yasmine.

The singer, whose real name was Hilde Rens, decided to leave this world behind a year ago today.

Here is Yasmine’s beautifully bittersweet ‘Ik Was Zo Graag Bij Jou Gebleven‘, an adaptation of ‘Is This What I Get For Loving You?‘ by The Ronettes.

Charley says VIDEO! Dean – Someday

June 24, 2010

Some time ago I told you how Idool 2007 winner Dean Delannoit was still bravely soldiering on.

At the time the only way to hear the song was to listen to a 30 second preview clip on iTunes. Luckily, the Dean team realised this is no way to run a business and a video for ‘Someday‘ was put up a couple of days ago.

I’m always in awe of videos and tv shows that work brilliantly with light and colours, so I was happy to see Elias Mentzel return on directing duties. The son of Flemish actress Greet Rouffaer had previously been responsible for the dark smouldering video of Dean’s last video ‘My Desire‘. With some help from his production team he managed to give ‘Someday‘ a brilliant look as well.

Charley says LIST! Songs I Heard At Work Today 23/06/2010

June 23, 2010

Summer’s here and I wanted to let you guys know that I’m quite fond of the instore sound system at my summer job. Here are four songs I secretly sang along to today.

What: Natalia – You Are (Live)
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9WF91ZjqFQ
About: Idool 2003 diva Natalia’s live cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘You Are‘. I was surprised to hear this as it was only ever released as a b-side and a bonus track on the ‘Back For More’ rerelease.

What: Safura – Drip Drop
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54qYAw9qtRc
About: The song that represented Azerbaijan at the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest is still very much amazing. I should really look into getting the album as the samples on Amazon sound amazing.

What: KT Tunstall – Other Side Of The World
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jpYwsfC3ZY
About: Basically just a gorgeous song that got featured on the soundtrack of the Dutch movie ‘Alles Is Liefde‘.

What: Joe Cocker – N’Oubliez Jamais
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xa_1KxR-8M
About: One of those songs I’ll forever remember as something my mom loved when I was a kid.

Charley says VIDEO! Susanna Kay – Off The Hook

June 22, 2010

You know you’re onto a winner when even the Jiffy bag the CD comes in is glamorous!

Susanna Kay is The Netherlands’ first Glam Pop star. The outfits, the video, the artwork… They all got that little bit of extra attention. Oh, and the music’s pretty damn good as well!

In fact, ‘Off The Hook‘ is such a great pop song that Spanish singer Edurne got her hands on it and released her own interpretation. However, not only was Susanna first, she’s also got the better version. She’s got the voice ánd she has DEEKAY on production duties. This superstar team of producers have done all sorts of brilliant songs for the likes of Paula Abdul, JLS, Sugababes and Charice.

Be sure to check Charley says POP! later this week to read all about the interview I had with the lovely Susanna Kay, The Netherlands’ next big popstar!

For now, here’s her brilliant debut single ‘Off The Hook‘!
