Charley says ARTIST! Dum Dum Club

March 25, 2012

Dum Dum Club is a side project of David Vervoort.

You probably know him best as co-producer and songwriter of Lasgo’s first two albums. In recent years he’s ventured into writing and producing for all kinds of genres, from pop (Fourlicious‘ new tracks) to schlager (most notably the epic “Dos Cervezas” by Tom Waes). David has also had chart success of his very own, with “B*tch” being his biggest hit to date under the moniker Dave McCullen. With the line “I just like to call you my bitch” as the song’s catchy hook and a brilliant video of old people raving to his dance beats, the track got to number 6 back in 2004.

In 2009 David created the first Dum Dum Club release. “I’m Sorry” was a cheerful little pop tune that sees a lover apologising for what he’s done wrong in the hope of getting back together. As he did with the odd Lasgo album track David provided the vocals himself. In the video however he’s nowhere to be seen, with a group of his friends taking to the stage instead. Among them you may recognise former Lasgo singer Evi Goffin, Edmée and Flor from DHT ft. Edmée and Temptation Island contestant turned singer Reshum Van Til!

I have to admit that Dum Dum Club’s second single kind of passed me by when it was first released. “Don’t Go” came out in 2010 and sadly all traces of it seem to have vanished from YouTube since. It is however available on Spotify, where you can hear David’s sad tale of lost love set to summer-y reggae-light beats. Think crying into your cocktail at a beach party.

Now Casino Total, David’s imprint on the Solid Music label, brings us a new classic for 2012. “Oh Boy” marks a change in musical direction, although it does continue Dum Dum Club’s run of setting non-happy lyrics to cheery backing tracks. This time an as of yet unidentified lady tells her lover for the night to take a hike. “Cause boy, it was fun just for a while, you even made me smile and now I realise and see that you’re no good for me”. I’ll tell you what though, there couldn’t be a more swinging way to get shown the door than by hearing this tune! It’s “We No Speak Americano” without the dance bits. It’s Caro Emerald or Lady Linn if they were into cheeky one night stands. It’s awesome.

Charley says VIDEO! Fatty K – Sophisticated

March 24, 2012

This post takes us back to early 2009 when the Justin Timberlake influenced tune below was released.

When this artist was still a kid named Ken Flamant he wanted to become a drummer, but for lack of a drum he started making up the sounds himself. Fastforward to years later when he would be known as Ken Beatbox, Belgian beatbox champion.

Having made a name for himself on national tv as beatboxer, the next step was to become a recording artist. Now under the name Fatty K he released his debut single “Lonely“. The track got to number 31 and the charts and came with a video that starred “Spring” actress and “Vlaanderen Vakantieland” host Tatyana Beloy.

For his second (and as of yet final) release “Sophisticated” Fatty K scaled back the beatboxing, put himself in a nice suit and brought us this smooth Serge Ramaekers production. Despite a Senol Korkmaz video and, well, the track being quite good indeed, “Sophisticated” only spent one week in the charts at number 49. Shame.

“Sophisticated” by Fatty K is available on Spotify.

Charley says ARTIST! Glenn Claes (Winner Of The Voice Van Vlaanderen)

March 21, 2012

Meet Glenn Claes, the very first winner of The Voice Van Vlaanderen.

Flanders fell in love with the singing plumber from the moment he poked his head out of his camper’s door. Worried about being late to his audition, he’d decided to drive to the studio the day before, parked his camper van on the parking lot and spent the night there.

For his much hyped audition he sang “I Shot The Sheriff”. Before he’d even properly sung the first two lines all four chairs had turned. Under the guidance of his coach, Arid lead singer Jasper Steverlinck, Glenn sailed through the battles and secured his spot as one of the red hot favourites for the live shows.

Glenn Claes – The Sound Of Silence
http://vtm.be/the-voice-van-vlaanderen/artikel/emotionele-glenn-met-sound-of-silence

In those live shows Glenn impressed even more with renditions of “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man“, “Have A Nice Day“, “Big Jet Plane“, “Message In A Bottle” and “Naive“.

However, it was his take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound Of Silence” that really captured the nation and even shot to number 2 in the official charts. An emotional Glenn wore a Pukkelpop t-shirt for his heartfelt performance. He dedicated the song to the victims of the 2011 festival drama, one of which was his friend.

In the final Glenn beat runner-up Silke to the title with 52% of the votes. His winner’s single “Knight In Shining Armour” was written by coach Jasper Steverlinck, because they didn’t like the proposed song he was handed. Not a bad move, considering the lovely acoustic-y song got him straight into the Flemish top 5. With a physical single now in stores as well, that number 1 seems within reaching distance!

“Knight In Shining Armour” by Glenn Claes is available in stores and online at Spotify and iTunes.
Studio versions of “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man”, “Naive” and “The Sound Of Silence” by Glenn Claes are available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says SONG! Eva Simons – I Don’t Like You

March 21, 2012

She’s back!

Eva Simons has unleashed her new single “I Don’t Like You“, which is set to follow in the successful footsteps of her Afrojack collaboration “Take Over Control“. Behind this club banger are the capable hands of Zedd, German producer Anton Zaslavski whose Lady Gaga remix was featured on the Deluxe Edition of “Born This Way”.

Eva Simons first popped onto the music scene in 2004 when she was a contestant on Popstars: The Rivals in The Netherlands. She was voted into girlgroup Raffish who went on to release one album and three singles before disbanding.

Eva started working on music of her own and then finally in 2009 she stepped into the spotlight again. First as the resident singer on Dutch Dancing With The Stars, then as a popstar in her own right.

Her debut single “Silly Boy” leaked as a rumoured Rihanna & Lady Gaga duet. By the time it became clear that Eva was behind the track, it had picked up so much steam that she was signed to EMI for an international release.

Despite recording a truckload of tracks which (as we learned from the leaks) were all kinds of awesome, the project stalled and Eva parted ways with her label.

Now, one of the most promising popstars of The Netherlands has finally returned, with a brand new deal with Interscope to her name.

If “I Don’t Like You” is anything to go by, those years of waiting won’t have been in vain!

“I Don’t Like You” by Eva Simons will be available online as of March 26th.
The HalfStyle remix of “I Don’t Like You” by Eva Simons is available on Soundcloud.

Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music – Part 3

March 19, 2012

There seems to be no stopping the Belgian dance scene at the moment! Less than two weeks after posting a first and second update on the hottest new releases, here’s a third one!

The opening track to this post comes courtesy of Peter Luts, the mastermind behind Lasgo and AnnaGrace. With production and remix duties on many projects, Peter’s days must be jampacked. Yet he still finds the time to take on a solo project of his own and make himself as much of a household name in the charts as he is behind the scenes.

With his new single Peter sets out to top his biggest success to date, top 10 hit “The Rain” featuring the vocals of The Voice Van Vlaanderen contestant Lien Vervoort. Whereas his last release “Cayo” was an instrumental club anthem, Everyday marks a return to (as of yet unidentified) female vocals over those breezy, summery synths we all know and love! The track comes with an appropriately sunny video, although its love interest might surprise you!

Update 21.03.2012: According to CL in the comments to this post, the singer on Peter Luts’s “Everyday” is Chantal Kashala, one of Belgium’s best loved backing vocals!

A surprising addition to the latest dance releases is the return of Rank 1! Over 10 years since their biggest hit in Belgium, trance gem “Such Is Life“, the Dutch DJ duo is prepared to rule the charts once more. On Wild And Perfect Day they’ve teamed up with trance musician Jochen Miller and, surprisingly, Sarah Bettens!

You may remember Sarah as the leading lady of internationally successful Belgian rock group K’s Choice whose “Not An Addict” is probably one of the most iconic songs ever to come out of this country. Sarah’s vocals complement the blast-out-of-your-car-speakers-with-the-top-down-on-a-sun-filled-roadtrip-ness of “Wild And Perfect Day” perfectly.

Lastly, the brand new Sylver single I talked about in my earlier update now comes with a brand new video! Silvy -who’s really rocking that new hair- went to shoot the City Of Angels video in, well, the city of angels! We see her driving around Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive only stopping to ogle a ripped, shirtless man working out. As you do.

“Everyday” by Peter Luts is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“Wild And Perfect Day” by Rank 1 & Jochen Miller ft. Sarah Bettens is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“City Of Angels” by Sylver is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says ARTIST! Iris aka Airis aka Laura Van den Bruel

March 18, 2012

So who is this Iris that’ll be representing Belgium at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, Azerbaijan?

Longtime readers of Charley says POP! may remember her from this post, but for those of you just joining, let me introduce you.

Iris was born in 1995 as Laura Van den Bruel and has been into music since she was a kid. As about half of Belgium’s talented youngsters she auditioned for Junior Eurovision at one point, but narrowly missed out on a place among the finalists.

But she needn’t worry, her big break would come just a few years later. A then 15 year old Laura submitted a YouTube rendition of Céline Dion’s “I’m Alive” to Joepie’s Talentbooth. This online competition was a joint effort by Belgium’s leading teen magazine Joepie and record label Sonic Angel. Laura’s impressive vocals earned her a spot among the five finalists and she went on to win the entire competition.

With a Sonic Angel record deal secured, it was time to decide how she would go about releasing her very first single. With the Flemish music scene saturated with Lauras (Laura Lynn, Laura Omloop, Laura Ramaekers…) she decided to go by the name of Airis. That’s Iris pronounced in English, with an extra A to make it all more Google-friendly.

For her debut Airis teamed up with Piet Vastenavondt, Wouter Vander Veken and Guus Fluit. The first being the lead singer of Owen and the latter two being the musical masterminds behind Bandits and Ellektra‘s musical output. The result was “Wonderful“, a country-light feel good song, that got her playlisted on radio and into the Flemish top 30.

Then late last year came the news that would make her a household name in Belgium. Iris, now without the extra A, was internally selected by Flemish public broadcaster één to represent Belgium at Eurovision, beating the likes of crooner Yannick Bovy to the spot.

An appeal was launched to submit songs for Iris to sing in Baku. No less than 270 tracks were submitted and after much deliberation just two remained.

Safety Net” was written by Boots Ottestad, Aimée Proal and Barrett Yeretsian, who among them have writing credentials for the likes of Robbie Williams and Kelly Clarkson.

However, in last night’s national final Belgium chose to send “Would You“, written by Jean Bosco Safari, Walter Mannaerts and 18 year old Nina Sampermans. Jean is a renowned Belgian singer/songwriter, Walter was the driving force behind Bab‘s excellent and majorly underrated debut album and Nina is working on a debut album of her own.

So with her entry chosen and a ticket to Azerbaijan in her pocket, what is next for Iris?

Eurosong.be have managed to find out that a full album will be released on April 27th. The album will include “Wonderful“, her two Eurovision songs and brand new tracks of which five have been chosen from Iris’s Eurovision entries that didn’t make the cut.

With Iris citing Carrie Underwood as her biggest idol in a recent interview, I’m excited to hear an entire album of Iris’s country-light pop!

“Would You” by Iris is available on iTunes.
“Wonderful” by Iris is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Iris’s debut album will be available as of Friday April 27th, you can still buy a FanShare and help fund this album.

Charley says ARTICLE – A Brief Post Idool 2011 Overview Including Maureen’s Everyday Thing

March 16, 2012

Idool 2011 will not only be remembered as the talent show that with “More To Me” had the best group single ever. Its refocus on looking for proper popstars -this is the “Idol” franchise after all- left us with a young, fresh-faced top 10. Gone were the days when finalists would be pregnant mums or classical singers, this lot was ready to take over the charts!

And indeed, an impressive number of contestants went on to make an impression on the Belgian music scene. Winner Kevin and runner-up Kato‘s debut albums both went gold, Dennis and Kristof had the innovative idea to release a double album together with each filling up one disc and Alyssa has just unleashed her first pop stomper.

Rocker Izzy didn’t make it out of bootcamp but has been working with his band Epic Lane ever since and gay-teenager-who-likes-to-wear-heels Falko, who stranded in the final 15, is said to release his Kylie inspired debut single any time now.

Even those who didn’t get a record deal are still doing music. Manuel has enrolled in music school, Astrid got through to the battle rounds in The Voice and Jonas & Lora have teamed up as cover band The Pony Express.

Maureen – Everyday Thing

Finally, let me present you one more addition to the list! Maureen Vanherberghen was the curly-haired girl who made an impression with her “Rolling In The Deep” rendition. The former girl scout (well, it’s called “chiro” here) was one of the most consistent singers in the competition and ended up finishing fourth.

After the show she went on to record a translated cover of James Blunt’s “Stay The Night”, which served as the new theme tune to Belgium’s longest running soap opera, Familie.

Now, 2012 finally sees the release of Maureen’s own material! She has signed to brand new up and coming label Pop’m who will be guiding her towards an Eliza Doolittle and Joss Stone inspired sound.

Her debut single “Everyday Thing” already sounds like a firm step in the right direction! The cheerful track was written by songwriting team Chicks With Hits, previously responsible for “The Joker” by Maureen’s Idool friend Kato.

There’s no sign of “Everyday Thing” on YouTube or Spotify yet, but Maureen has put it up on her official website’s player! You can check out the full song over on www.maureen-music.be! It’s sure to get you tapping your feet in no time!

“Everyday Thing” by Maureen is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“More To Me” by Idool 2011 is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“Get On Your Feet” by Alissa is available on Spotify and iTunes.

The Idool 2011 album is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Kevin’s album “Thank You” is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Kato’s album “Flamingo” is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Dennis’s album is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Kristof De Cleyn’s album is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Epic Lane’s EP “Born In The Eighties” is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says SONG! Charlotte Nilsson Perrelli – I Write You A Lovesong

March 15, 2012

Back then she was Charlotte Nilsson or simply Charlotte, these days she goes by Charlotte Perrelli.

This one is for my 11 year old self.

Just because.

Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music – Update

March 14, 2012

Just a couple of days ago I brought you up to speed on everything that’s happening on the Belgian dance scene and already there’s new things for me to report on! So without further ado, an update!

When we last spoke only a preview of Jessy’s 2012 remake of her classic “Innocence” had been online. Now, I can present you the diva’s shiny new video for “Innocence ’12“! Having heard the full thing now, we can assure you that producer Regi has found a way to make Abie Flinstone‘s rap blend in seemlessly with all the things you loved about the original song. And yes, the epic “it feels so good… come on and take me” bit is still there!

Oh, and be sure to compare my earlier write-up of the song with the YouTube description for the “Innocence ’12” video! Someone at Jessy’s label Mostiko must be reading Charley says POP!

There may not be a video for her group Sylver’s new single “City Of Angels” yet, but Silvy De Bie has shot scenes for her latest solo song. The result of that is now on YouTube! Newly redhead Silvy looks gorgeous in the video for “Without You” which is credited to David Latour ft. Sil!

Lastly, here’s one I missed out on in my previous post. You may recognise Elisa Guarraci from her time on Topmodel, her 2008 Eurovision effort or her audition for The Voice Van Vlaanderen. These days though she’s mainly busy with her girlgroup Fourlicious, who are promoting “Over You” and are said to be working with former Lasgo co-producer Dave McCullen on new material.

In between all of that she’s found the time to record “In My Arms“. The song marks the Belgian/Italian singer’s second collaboration with producer Philip D. Earlier the two worked together on the breezy “When Love Takes Over” soundalike “The Last Goodbye“.

So there you go, until further notice, consider yourself updated on the main new releases in Belgian dance music!

“The Ultimate Jessy: Best Of 1995 – 2012″ by Jessy is available on iTunes and Spotify.
“Innocence ’12″ by Jessy ft. Abie Flinstone is available on iTunes.
“Without You” by David Latour ft. Sil is available on iTunes.
“In My Arms” by Philip D ft. Elisa is available soon.
