Charley says SONG! Eva Jacobs – If I Ain’t Got You

April 26, 2012

If you’ve read my post on what is next for the The Voice Van Vlaanderen contestants then you knew Eva Jacobs had something up her sleeve for us!

Eva was one of the early favourites in the competition, but was surprisingly eliminated in the Battle Rounds. With a Wouter Van Belle produced album already recorded, she wasn’t going to let the momentum fade, though. After getting back into the studio to tweak some last bits and pieces she is ready to release her eponymous album on May 18th. I’m assuming Eva’s debut will include some of the tracks she has up on her official website and YouTube channel, as well as her Bent Van Looy penned, pre-The Voice single “Shine“.

To really kickstart this campaign the soulful singer/songwriter has gone back to the moment Belgium first fell in love with her, her impressive rendition of Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You’. It got all four chairs turning when she auditioned for The Voice and has been a fan favourite since, so she’s recorded a studio version to be released as her brand new single.

“If I Ain’t Got You” by Eva Jacobs is available on Spotify and iTunes from April 27th.

Charley says SONG! Men2B – Keep On Moving

Dutch Popstars: The Rivals boyband Men2B with their 2005 top 30 single “Keep On Moving“, which was written by Alain Clark before he became a superstar of his own.

Just because.

Charley says SONG! Sarah Ferri – On My Own

April 14, 2012

Sarah Ferri doesn’t sound like what you usually come across on this blog, but how can you deny anyone with cover art like that?

Sarah’s style is perhaps best described with how she launched her debut album “Ferritales“. She took to the cosy coffee bars of her hometown Ghent to surprise the customers with her mix of 50’s swing with toe-tapping jazz elements. It’s a wonderful idea to consume Sarah’s music in a “coffee with chocolate muffin” setting or while having some pastry in a tiny tea-room with colourful vintage wallpaper. You get the idea.

Lead single “Were You There” explores Sarah’s piano ballad side, but personally I’d start with “On My Own“. The album opener sounds like Vaya Con Dios getting stuck in a time machine to the earlier part of the last century with Caro Emerald and Lady Linn in tow.

And once again, that album cover!

“Ferritales” by Sarah Ferri is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says SONG! Eva Simons – I Don’t Like You

March 21, 2012

She’s back!

Eva Simons has unleashed her new single “I Don’t Like You“, which is set to follow in the successful footsteps of her Afrojack collaboration “Take Over Control“. Behind this club banger are the capable hands of Zedd, German producer Anton Zaslavski whose Lady Gaga remix was featured on the Deluxe Edition of “Born This Way”.

Eva Simons first popped onto the music scene in 2004 when she was a contestant on Popstars: The Rivals in The Netherlands. She was voted into girlgroup Raffish who went on to release one album and three singles before disbanding.

Eva started working on music of her own and then finally in 2009 she stepped into the spotlight again. First as the resident singer on Dutch Dancing With The Stars, then as a popstar in her own right.

Her debut single “Silly Boy” leaked as a rumoured Rihanna & Lady Gaga duet. By the time it became clear that Eva was behind the track, it had picked up so much steam that she was signed to EMI for an international release.

Despite recording a truckload of tracks which (as we learned from the leaks) were all kinds of awesome, the project stalled and Eva parted ways with her label.

Now, one of the most promising popstars of The Netherlands has finally returned, with a brand new deal with Interscope to her name.

If “I Don’t Like You” is anything to go by, those years of waiting won’t have been in vain!

“I Don’t Like You” by Eva Simons will be available online as of March 26th.
The HalfStyle remix of “I Don’t Like You” by Eva Simons is available on Soundcloud.

Charley says SONG! Charlotte Nilsson Perrelli – I Write You A Lovesong

Charley says SONG! Hooverphonic – Happiness

February 17, 2012

Hooverphonic have been going from strength to strength ever since Noémie Wolfs was announced as the group’s new leading lady. The album “The Night Before” was awarded double platinum, the lead single of the same name dominated airwaves for months and the band won both a Radio 2 Zomerhit and MIA Award.

Now, after the final single from ‘The Night Before”, an amazing limited edition deluxe re-issue of debut album “A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular”, Noémie filling in for Kimbra on some of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” performances and Hooverphonic producer and mastermind Alex Callier being a coach on The Voice Van Vlaanderen, the group is ready for their next step.

(There, completely up to date on Hooverphonic in just three run-on sentences!)

In March and April the group is set to amaze Belgium with “Hooverphonic with Orchestra” at the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerp. Due to popular demand extra dates have been added, so be quick for a seat! Alex himself came up with the idea of an orchestral album to tie in with these performances. The album, due on March 9th, will contain brand new studio recordings of the best Hooverphonic tracks with an orchestral arrangement and Noémie singing! And yes, that includes the classic “Mad About You“!

Fans are also treated to “Happiness“, the new original track from “Hooverphonic with Orchestra” that was just released to iTunes and Spotify. The lovely track has a certain warmth to it that just makes me want to wrap the song around me like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. You know, if that were possible.

“Happiness” by Hooverphonic is now available on iTunes and Spotify.

Charley says SONG! Elle Oui aka Elvira Michieva – Blood On My Face

February 11, 2012

Elvira Michieva is probably best known for being the German Popstars contestant that got into a fight with Senna Guemmour after the latter spoiled the launch of Bisou, Elvira’s girl trio formed of singers that didn’t make the final Monrose lineup. The Clea to Monrose’s Girls Aloud, if you will.

Bisou went on to score two minor hits with “Die Erste Träne” and “Die Sonne Geht Auf“, both from the album “Hier Und Jetzt“. After the group split up Elvira tried to represent Azerbaijan at the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, participated in a German reality show comparable to Paris Hilton’s My New BFF and has had several songs floating about.

The definite highlight of her attempts at a pop career however remains “Blood On My Face“. Back in 2009 it was meant to be her big breakthrough under the name Elle Oui and considering how catchy it is, I wouldn’t have minded her succeeding one bit. I mean, try it. Try not to sing along to the “show you… what is… right and what’s wrong” bit!

Impossible indeed.

Charley says SONG! Peter Luts ft. Lynn Larouge – Hands Up

June 25, 2011

When I talked to Lasgo producer Peter Luts last year he was keen on doing more solo stuff and getting his own name out there. With the success of ‘The Rain‘ and ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling‘ he has been doing just that. The former was a proper top 10 hit and the video for the latter was popping up on music channels every five minutes.

Hands Up‘ is now set to follow suit.

The name Lynn Larouge might not ring a bell for most of you, but Peter enlisted the help of an old friend for this track. You may remember her as Lien Vervoort, the former Can You Duet and Let’s Go Lasgo contestant who provided vocals on Peter’s ‘The Rain‘!

Charley says SONG! About E – Dysfunctional

June 23, 2011

Back in 2007 sisters Tillia, Lori and Demi competed in the first and only season of Belgium’s Got Talent. Despite winning, the girls failed to become household names and decided to try their luck on Netlog, the Belgian equivalent to MySpace. The songs they put up on their profile landed them a spot on various tv shows and eventually a record contract with Sony.

The label managed to give About E a Pixie Lott / Ke$ha co-write to record, but unfortunately it hasn’t quite made waves in the Belgian charts so far.

Here’s to hoping we hear more from these three ladies as I’m never one to turn down a proper new pop act!

PS: If you happen to have a Netlog account yourself, make sure to friend About E as they’ll send a free download of ‘Dysfunctional’ your way if you do!
