May 2, 2011

Words aren’t even necessary at this point.

I adore this woman to death and want to hold her and hug her and tell her everything’s going to be alright.

If you fancy something to read while listening to Kat’s awesome new club banger, you can check out my interview with her around the time of ‘Push Push‘ below!

Charley says SONG! Lana Lewis – Dirty Love

April 19, 2011

‘My Name Is…’ was a 2010 talent show in Belgium and The Netherlands which can best be described as Stars In Their Eyes done through Britain’s Got Talent’s format of audition / semi-final / final.

Amy Winehouse impersonator Merante took home the crown in the adult category, but the breakout star was Lana Lewis.

The then 14-year-old told how she’d been bullied all her life, up to the point of being beaten with iron chains. She’d found comfort in the music, style and personality of Lady Gaga and decided to finally pursue singing herself. Her rendition of ‘Bad Romance’ was enough to convince the judges and Lana went on to win in the children’s category.

You can check out her English subtitled audition and semi-final performance in the YouTube video below.

A year on, Lana is finally ready to step out of Gaga’s shadow and release her very own first single.

Songwriter Wim Claes and singer Gene Thomas penned her ‘Dirty Love‘. The two previously worked together on Gene’s pop group X-Session and his solo material. Wim is also the man behind Kim ‘Kay’s ‘Lilali‘ and Dean’s Idool 2007 winner’s single ‘So Many Ways‘.

The iTunes release is listed as being the ‘Elektrokid Radio Edit’, so I’m assuming the ‘Eye Of The Tiger‘ DJ was on production duties.

This lead to ‘Dirty Love‘ being set over thumping ‘Bad Romance’ inspired club beats, with a chorus reminiscent of Annemie’s brilliant ‘Animal Instinct‘.

Lana’s robot-ified vocals tell how she “feels like dirty love tonight”. With lines as “You heard me boy, pick up the toy, make me lose my mind” and ‘You touch my mmm…” this 15-year-old’s debut would make even Miley blush.

Charley says SONG! Tina Bride – Perfect Love

April 5, 2011

So last week a friend of mine was preparing a photoshoot and found himself in need of a chihuahua.

Eventually a lady by the name of Kim Poelmans gladly agreed to have her dog model for the day. Little did my friend know that in the early 00’s Kim was better known by her stage name Tina Bride!

Ever since we heard about Tina’s newfound dog manager status, my friends and I have had her 2001 hit ‘Perfect Love‘ lodged firmly into our heads.

In the days when every country was launching its own Britney, Tina Bride was one of the Belgian efforts with aforementioned song as her most successful single. The bandana wearing singer ended up releasing one album, ‘The Bride Side Of Life’.

These days Tina’s back to being Kim. She’s happily married to her wife Barbara and last we heard she’s now a dance teacher with her own photo studio.

Charley says SONG! Karma – I’m Sorry

March 28, 2011

Continuing our theme of Chilean born Belgian popstars, meet Andres P. Quiroz. Going by the name of Karma, he is set out to be Belgium’s next R&B wonderboy.

The biography in his YouTube video descriptions mentions him working with the likes of Stargate and Underdogs, but things really got going for him when his music was posted on ShowbizzONE.

The article came to Peter Muls’ attention, who promptly took Karma under his wings and got him signed to Mostiko.

You may remember Peter as being involved with about half of Belgium’s R&B scene, most famously launching Kaye Styles. He also had a hand in Cru5h 5, one of my favourite two-hit-wonder girl groups.

While Karma is working on his first album, a bunch of tracks are already floating around the net. These songs include both original ones and covers like ‘Gallery‘, originally by Mario Vasquez.

Of the brand new tracks ‘Take Me As I Am‘ is mentioned by Karma’s official site as a potential first single, but out of the songs online I hope they end up going with ‘I’m Sorry‘.

It’s not that I don’t like the former song, I’m just not too crazy on Andres’ voice in the chorus. ‘I’m Sorry‘ on the other hand has him sounding like a Michael Jackson influenced Ali Tcheelab on a ‘How To Save A Life‘ inspired R&B downtempo.

Whatever they end up releasing, I’ll be sure to keep you posted!

Charley says SONG! Ashley Roberts – Theme From A Summer Place

March 27, 2011

I was reading about Jessica Sutta’s latest dance track, got clicking on YouTube and before I knew it I was having a full-on solo PCD kind of morning.

It made me stumble upon upon the above Ashley Roberts song.

“The one that looks like Carrie Underwood” is yet to get her solo career properly started, but last year she treated her fans to a one-off buzz single.

‘Theme From A Summer Place’ was originally composed for the 1959 movie of the same name. The Percy Faith version topped the charts and was covered by many artists, including The Lettermen who released a vocal version.

Ashley’s rendition starts off all orchestral, but quickly drops in a beat to swizz up the song. And yet those vocals singing that gorgeously old fashioned melody give it that lounge-ish vibe that makes it perfect for this Sunday morning.

Think Pogo’s ‘Alice‘ with actual lyrics and added beats.

Charley says SONG! Nelson Moraïs – She’s So Lonely

March 23, 2011

Charley says POP! favourite Nelson Moraïs is back with another great dance track!

I told you earlier how Nelson went from being his sister’s background singer to Eurosong hopeful to Belgium’s smoothest voiced male dance star.

Last I heard an album was in the works for release in 2011, but at the rate he’s going he might have released himself an entire Best Of before you know it. Not that we’re complaining!

As far as I can tell from the writing credits, his latest gem sees Nelson stepping out of his Daniel Bovie produced comfort zone.

Instead, ‘She’s So Lonely‘ was co-written by Yves Gaillard.

The two previously worked together on ‘She’s Gone‘ and with a track record to Yves’ name that includes Hadise, Kate Ryan and Katerine Avgoustakis I’m not even sure why you’re still reading this instead of clicking the play button above like a mad man!

Charley says SONG! Talulah Does The Hula – Those Girls

March 19, 2011

I’m in the middle of shooting a short movie and today’s a big weekend for us with lots of scenes, lines and actresses. The idea is for us to make a pilot for the Belgian equivalent of The Hills, Gossip Girl and the likes, set in Bruges. One of my inspirations for it is the Irish reality drama Fade Street, so in the spirit of that, here’s its lovely theme song.

Charley says SONG! Gloria Gaynor – First Be A Woman (The Last Mix by Alex Natale)

November 2, 2010

The Alex Natale remix of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘First Be A Woman‘, still a major win on all fronts.

Just because.

Charley says SONG! Winsome – Chilly Cool

October 20, 2010

Well here’s something I never knew existed!

It seems like even the internet barely knows about it, as except for a single eBay listing there is no mention of this little gem anywhere!

I blindly picked this up the other day for just €0,20, because I recognised one of the girls in this pop trio to be Anke Frédérick!

Dancer Anke is probably best known as the ex-girlfriend of actor and tv host Peter van Asbroeck. These days she’s married to Pascal Durant, who as the winner of The Bachelorette-style dating show Wie Wordt De Man Van Phaedra?, has a media history of his own.

Before all this Anke was part of Spirit, a Flemish wannabe Steps in which Dimitri Vantomme and the amazing Roxane also had a spot. In fact, and at the risk of getting completely sidetracked, both Anke and Roxane had a cameo in the ‘Girls & Boys‘ video by Dimitri’s dance alter ego D-Me.

Anke Frédérick

And, as we now know, even before Spirit there was Winsome. Besides Anke there was Chung Hee and a young blonde by the name of Kim.

Now when I saw Kim’s picture on the back cover I thought I recognised a familiar face. A moment later it hit me, this is Kim Poelmans!

As bandana wearing brunette Tina Bride she had a string of small hits in the early 00’s. ‘Perfect Love‘, for example, got her into the top 20.

Things started to slow down for the singer halfway through the decade, but she made the headlines one more time coming out and getting married to her girlfriend.

Anyway, I know this seems like an awful lot of rambling and obscure Belgian pop connections, but then again, isn’t that what this blog is about?

Charley says SONG! Sandrine (Live In Bruges)

October 16, 2010

I was just watching Zot Van Vlaanderen on vtm.

The show is a Flemish adaptation of the Dutch Ik Hou Van Holland format. It’s a cheerful celebrity game show themed around the country it’s broadcast in. You’re bound to have a local version of the show sometime soon, by the way, as it’s been sold to a bunch of networks.

But that’s not what I came here to talk about.

To support the musical questions and contribute to the general atmosphere there’s a band that accompanies the show. Familiar faces in our Flemish support band are producer Hans Francken, husband of the lovely Ingrid Mank, and singer and radio host Raf Van Brussel.

However, the band member who caught my attention tonight was this one backing singer.

I have to admit I do not know her name, but I immediately recognised her from this great gig I went to this summer.

Back in July a couple of friends and I went to see Sandrine perform on the market square in Bruges!

The Idool 2004 singer, which I just mentioned in the earlier Aleksander With post, put on a great show with backing dancers that included Ketnet host Melvin Klooster.

Sandrine treated us to all her hits, except for ‘Ass In Check‘ which got bumped from the setlist at the last minute. I was pretty bummed about that, because, seriously, when else do you get the chance to scream “You can be my donkey, I’ll keep that ass in check” in public?

This post is getting to be a bit all over the place, so without further ado, here is our mystery backing singer sitting on Sandrine’s left side (our right) during this little acoustic set-within-a-set of ‘When Love Takes Over‘ and ‘Release Me‘!
