Charley says VIDEO! Axeela & Stéphanie Onclin – Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi

May 19, 2012

Axeela, easily the most talked about The Voice contestant on my blog, has teamed up with fellow finalist Stéphanie Onclin for their first release since appearing on the talent show. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for a major pop stomper from Axeela (and a pop/rock anthem from Stéphanie while we’re at it), but for now their take on ‘Lady Marmalade’ serves as the perfect tastemaker for their upcoming concerts with The Voice Live On Tour!

After you get ‘Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi‘ on iTunes or add the track to your Spotify playlists, be sure to also stop by the Hoegaarden Rosée Facebook page for a free download of the song’s special ‘Voulez-Vous Rosée Avec Moi’ edit in collaboration with the raspberry flavoured beer brand!

‘Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi’ by Axeela & Stéphanie Onclin is available on Spotify and iTunes.
Tickets and info for The Voice Live On Tour with Glenn, Silke, Bert, Stéphanie & Axeela are available at Sherpa.be.

Charley says VIDEO! Leki – Get Over

May 16, 2012

Last time Leki was getting ready to release an album she still had The Sweet Mints by her side. ‘Love Me Another Day‘, the lead single from their eponymous album, was all smiles and handclaps ahoy. With a shiny, glossy production from King Of Sweden (who’s actually Finnish, if I remember correctly) the project was one of 2009’s most joyful things in music. Why do I mention this? Well, because the theme of her fascinating new single ‘Get Over‘ couldn’t be further away from that.

For years now Leki has been involved in the Nanda charity. She’s set out to finish the hospital her father once started building in their native country of Congo. Whereas her previous Nanda single, ‘Peculiar Places‘, embodied hopefulness, ‘Get Over‘ faces the demons of the dark time she went through after a recent charity trip to Africa. In Leki’s own words: “To find my inner peace I first needed to reignite the spark to that inner fire! One of my personal mantras to get me going, get me out of the mental rut, reignite my spark and stir up my inner fire to melt away my bitterness and connect to heart and soul is “Get Over”…”

It may take a couple of listens to get over the shock of seeing the woman who sang about everybody wanting to be Elvis releasing a track this dark, hard and in your face, but it’s worth sticking around for.

‘Get Over’ by Leki is available on Spotify and iTunes.
More information about Leki’s charity Nanda is available at www.nandavzw.org.

Charley says VIDEO! – Kate Ryan – Robots

May 14, 2012

Kate Ryan is one third of Charley says POP!’s Holy Trinity. Alongside Hadise and Katerine Avgoustakis she is, to me, one of the best popstars Belgium has given the world. So naturally seeing Kate release a brand new music video is a PRETTY BIG DEAL.

And boy, does she deliver! Kate is honestly looking in-cre-di-ble. She’s been mostly pants-less throughout this campaign (just check her last two videos) but for ‘Robots‘ she ups the sexy even more. There’s a very flattering futuristic/space/robot corset! There’s a skintight catsuit! There’s an awesome looking headgear thingy! And I’ll try to contain my not-so-secret inner fanboy before I start complementing hair and make-up as well.

Even more importantly, it’s a bit of a brilliant pop tune, isn’t it? The track has been written by Paul Drew, Greig Watts and Pete Barringer, who have previously been responsible for Kate’s ‘LoveLife‘ and Katerine Avgoustakis’ 2006 Eurosong entry. ‘Robots‘ has Kate sounding more pop than ever before, like how it might sound if Daze were to sample ‘Living On Video‘ by Trans-X in the year 3000.

Bring on that album!

‘Robots’ by Kate Ryan and its Extended Radio Edit, Shutterz Remix, Chris Feelding Remix and William Burstedt Remix is available on SpotifySoundcloud and iTunes.

David Latour ft. Kat DeLuna & Fo Onassis – Had A Dream (Producelast)

May 4, 2012

It’s no secret that I have a major soft spot for Kat DeLuna. The American popstar with Dominican roots has banged out some brilliant anthems in her time and is the kind of artist to keep working her ass off whatever setbacks may arise. She was also one of the first artists I ever interviewed for Charley says POP!

Had A Dream” has her team up with Belgian DJ and producer David Latour. David has done remixes for the likes of About E and his tracks with Narco and Sylver’s Sil have been mentioned on this blog earlier.

Having featured on songs with Jean-Roch and Nicola Fasano, Kat has dabbled in dance music before. However, “Had A Dream” takes it to another level and is without a doubt her most exciting dance track so far.

The song, which also features Fo Onassis, is based around the Belgian jump influenced trance classic “Producelast” by Trancescape. The sample gives “Had A Dream” a harder edge than Kat’s ever had before and should go down a storm in the club. So get yourself to a YouTube jumpstyle tutorial and start practicing your moves to this new banger!

“Had A Dream (Producelast)” by David Latour ft. Kat DeLuna & Fo Onassis is available soon.

Charley says VIDEO! Little Collin – When You Are Calling Me

May 3, 2012

If you’ve been wondering what that ridiculously catchy song from the ALLO Telecom commercial is, look no further!

Collin De Bruyne is a singer/songwriter from Brussels who posted a short clip of what was to become “When You Are Calling Me” on Facebook. That got picked up for a 30 second ALLO Telecom jingle, then that in turn got picked up for a full single release and eventually a video was shot in Antwerp and Barcelona.

The track’s slight jazziness will inevitably lead to comparisons with Jamie Cullum, but it’s upbeat, cheerful and definitely more on the pop side of things. His YouTube video diaries tell us he’s already been recording follow-up single “Little Treasure” in New York, but let’s first make “When You Are Calling Me” the radio fixture and breakthrough hit it deserves to be for Little Collin!

Oh, and be sure to stay tuned till the end of the video for the cute revelation of why he’s so obsessed with women’s names!

“When You Are Calling Me” by Little Collin is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says SONG! Sarah Ferri – On My Own

April 14, 2012

Sarah Ferri doesn’t sound like what you usually come across on this blog, but how can you deny anyone with cover art like that?

Sarah’s style is perhaps best described with how she launched her debut album “Ferritales“. She took to the cosy coffee bars of her hometown Ghent to surprise the customers with her mix of 50’s swing with toe-tapping jazz elements. It’s a wonderful idea to consume Sarah’s music in a “coffee with chocolate muffin” setting or while having some pastry in a tiny tea-room with colourful vintage wallpaper. You get the idea.

Lead single “Were You There” explores Sarah’s piano ballad side, but personally I’d start with “On My Own“. The album opener sounds like Vaya Con Dios getting stuck in a time machine to the earlier part of the last century with Caro Emerald and Lady Linn in tow.

And once again, that album cover!

“Ferritales” by Sarah Ferri is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says VIDEO! Bodyspasm – Twenty Radios

April 8, 2012

If you’ve been searching for a worthy follow-up to ‘Anticipate‘ by Skream ft. Sam Frank then look no more.

Bodyspasm are Belgian brothers Pieter and Sebastiaan Steeno. Their Facebook page describes them as an electronic boyband and while their music is certainly electronic, don’t expect them to tell you what makes you beautiful or how they’re glad you came.

Their official debut single ‘Twenty Radios‘ is a full-on escapist rave anthem with beats that only get even fatter and dirtier as the song progresses. With an awesome video to match and the involvement of Shameboy‘s Luuk Cox in the track, this seems like a surefire winner to me.

‘Twenty Radios’ by Bodyspasm is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says ARTIST! Dum Dum Club

March 25, 2012

Dum Dum Club is a side project of David Vervoort.

You probably know him best as co-producer and songwriter of Lasgo’s first two albums. In recent years he’s ventured into writing and producing for all kinds of genres, from pop (Fourlicious‘ new tracks) to schlager (most notably the epic “Dos Cervezas” by Tom Waes). David has also had chart success of his very own, with “B*tch” being his biggest hit to date under the moniker Dave McCullen. With the line “I just like to call you my bitch” as the song’s catchy hook and a brilliant video of old people raving to his dance beats, the track got to number 6 back in 2004.

In 2009 David created the first Dum Dum Club release. “I’m Sorry” was a cheerful little pop tune that sees a lover apologising for what he’s done wrong in the hope of getting back together. As he did with the odd Lasgo album track David provided the vocals himself. In the video however he’s nowhere to be seen, with a group of his friends taking to the stage instead. Among them you may recognise former Lasgo singer Evi Goffin, Edmée and Flor from DHT ft. Edmée and Temptation Island contestant turned singer Reshum Van Til!

I have to admit that Dum Dum Club’s second single kind of passed me by when it was first released. “Don’t Go” came out in 2010 and sadly all traces of it seem to have vanished from YouTube since. It is however available on Spotify, where you can hear David’s sad tale of lost love set to summer-y reggae-light beats. Think crying into your cocktail at a beach party.

Now Casino Total, David’s imprint on the Solid Music label, brings us a new classic for 2012. “Oh Boy” marks a change in musical direction, although it does continue Dum Dum Club’s run of setting non-happy lyrics to cheery backing tracks. This time an as of yet unidentified lady tells her lover for the night to take a hike. “Cause boy, it was fun just for a while, you even made me smile and now I realise and see that you’re no good for me”. I’ll tell you what though, there couldn’t be a more swinging way to get shown the door than by hearing this tune! It’s “We No Speak Americano” without the dance bits. It’s Caro Emerald or Lady Linn if they were into cheeky one night stands. It’s awesome.

Charley says ARTIST! Glenn Claes (Winner Of The Voice Van Vlaanderen)

March 21, 2012

Meet Glenn Claes, the very first winner of The Voice Van Vlaanderen.

Flanders fell in love with the singing plumber from the moment he poked his head out of his camper’s door. Worried about being late to his audition, he’d decided to drive to the studio the day before, parked his camper van on the parking lot and spent the night there.

For his much hyped audition he sang “I Shot The Sheriff”. Before he’d even properly sung the first two lines all four chairs had turned. Under the guidance of his coach, Arid lead singer Jasper Steverlinck, Glenn sailed through the battles and secured his spot as one of the red hot favourites for the live shows.

Glenn Claes – The Sound Of Silence

In those live shows Glenn impressed even more with renditions of “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man“, “Have A Nice Day“, “Big Jet Plane“, “Message In A Bottle” and “Naive“.

However, it was his take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound Of Silence” that really captured the nation and even shot to number 2 in the official charts. An emotional Glenn wore a Pukkelpop t-shirt for his heartfelt performance. He dedicated the song to the victims of the 2011 festival drama, one of which was his friend.

In the final Glenn beat runner-up Silke to the title with 52% of the votes. His winner’s single “Knight In Shining Armour” was written by coach Jasper Steverlinck, because they didn’t like the proposed song he was handed. Not a bad move, considering the lovely acoustic-y song got him straight into the Flemish top 5. With a physical single now in stores as well, that number 1 seems within reaching distance!

“Knight In Shining Armour” by Glenn Claes is available in stores and online at Spotify and iTunes.
Studio versions of “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man”, “Naive” and “The Sound Of Silence” by Glenn Claes are available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music – Part 3

March 19, 2012

There seems to be no stopping the Belgian dance scene at the moment! Less than two weeks after posting a first and second update on the hottest new releases, here’s a third one!

The opening track to this post comes courtesy of Peter Luts, the mastermind behind Lasgo and AnnaGrace. With production and remix duties on many projects, Peter’s days must be jampacked. Yet he still finds the time to take on a solo project of his own and make himself as much of a household name in the charts as he is behind the scenes.

With his new single Peter sets out to top his biggest success to date, top 10 hit “The Rain” featuring the vocals of The Voice Van Vlaanderen contestant Lien Vervoort. Whereas his last release “Cayo” was an instrumental club anthem, Everyday marks a return to (as of yet unidentified) female vocals over those breezy, summery synths we all know and love! The track comes with an appropriately sunny video, although its love interest might surprise you!

Update 21.03.2012: According to CL in the comments to this post, the singer on Peter Luts’s “Everyday” is Chantal Kashala, one of Belgium’s best loved backing vocals!

A surprising addition to the latest dance releases is the return of Rank 1! Over 10 years since their biggest hit in Belgium, trance gem “Such Is Life“, the Dutch DJ duo is prepared to rule the charts once more. On Wild And Perfect Day they’ve teamed up with trance musician Jochen Miller and, surprisingly, Sarah Bettens!

You may remember Sarah as the leading lady of internationally successful Belgian rock group K’s Choice whose “Not An Addict” is probably one of the most iconic songs ever to come out of this country. Sarah’s vocals complement the blast-out-of-your-car-speakers-with-the-top-down-on-a-sun-filled-roadtrip-ness of “Wild And Perfect Day” perfectly.

Lastly, the brand new Sylver single I talked about in my earlier update now comes with a brand new video! Silvy -who’s really rocking that new hair- went to shoot the City Of Angels video in, well, the city of angels! We see her driving around Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive only stopping to ogle a ripped, shirtless man working out. As you do.

“Everyday” by Peter Luts is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“Wild And Perfect Day” by Rank 1 & Jochen Miller ft. Sarah Bettens is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“City Of Angels” by Sylver is available on Spotify and iTunes.
