Charley says TV! Axelle on The Voice Van Vlaanderen

February 10, 2012

Back in 2010 I posted how Axelle Aerts just might the new best thing in Belgian pop and come 2012 it looks like the rest of the country is starting to agree!

Having taught herself to sing by recording Christina Aguilera’s “Stripped” album over and over on a tape recorder, at the age of 10 Axelle knew exactly what she wanted in life. She took her first steps towards fulfilling that dream of singing by competing in the 2006 Belgian Junior Eurovision selection as one half of girl duo Lizz@xy and winning a support slot on Flemish superstar Natalia‘s Glamorous tour a couple of years later.

In 2010 pop stardom was just around the corner when Axelle recorded “What Do You Want From Me” and teamed up with then upcoming label SonicAngel for its release. Despite having cost her dad €6000 at the time, the video for her first release under the name Axeela is no longer up online. Despite introducing the song at Eurovision star and label mate Tom Dice’s album launch, the catchy pop anthem peaked at a disappointing #48 in the charts. After follow-up “Hump Hump” was given away as a free download on www.axeela.com things sadly went quiet around the promising singer.

(Audition at The Voice Van Vlaanderen)

Enter The Voice. The talent show that brought her idol Christina back to relevance, was set to do the same for Axelle. Before she’d even finished the opening line of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” all four chairs had turned and she found herself a red hot favourite in Belgium’s best watched talent show. Under guidance of coach Natalia (yes, the same Natalia she’d toured with earlier) she got rid of her annoying “diva hands” and steamrolled her way through the battle episodes with Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Telephone”.

Tonight sees Axelle taking the stage in the The Voice Van Vlaanderen live shows. Here’s to hoping her rendition of Jessie J’s “Domino” will convince Flanders to pick up their phone, as despite being up against some great voices and likeable talents Axelle is without a doubt the proper popstar of the bunch.

However, even should she get booted off by some freak televote accident, at least we’ll have a brand new shiny studio recording from the girl. As with other international adaptations of The Voice all performances are available for purchase on iTunes right after each live show.

Even better, the first tracks by all 24 finalists have been bundled on one CD that is in stores as of today! Considering her prominent place on the album cover I can’t imagine being the only one to believe in Axelle’s popstar power…

If you can’t wait for tonight’s episode -or for international readers, tomorrow’s performance clip here– check out some more songs from Axelle’s past in this old blog post while reading my 2010 interview with her!

Charley says SONG! Yannick Bovy – She’s Even More Beautiful

August 10, 2011

As in previous years, the instore sound system at my summer job is doing a terrific job. While this year’s theme seems to be Beyoncé singles from the ‘4’ era and the odd Spice Girls ballad, one of my favourite musical moments was the reintroduction of Yannick Bovy.

Some time ago I posted how Yannick, who in 2007 recorded ‘Better World Without You‘ with Milk Inc.’s Regi Penxten, was trying to find the right people to help him become a Belgian Bublé. A year later, he’s finally completed that mission.

The demo he’d been working on with songwriters Michael Garvin and Patrick Hamilton got him signed to Universal. The finished result is ‘She’s Even More Beautiful‘, the gorgeous track that’s been making waves at radio stations and, well, my summer job’s instore playlist.

Unfortunately I can only offer you this live rendition radio station JOEfm put up online. However, considering Yannick’s great vocal performance, it might as well have been the studio version.

Charley says VIDEO! Youth Olympic Games 2010 – Everyone

August 11, 2010

So apparently there’s such a thing as the Youth Olympic Games and like any self-respecting sports event, you’re going to need a theme song.

Host country Singapore got five singers from five continents together on ‘Everyone‘.

The song itself isn’t anything groundbreaking, but is pleasant enough. Its real merit however is featuring Charley says POP! favourites Jody Williams and Jessica Mauboy on the same track, while introducing us to Tabitha Nauser.

If neither of those names ring a bell, below is, from left to right, a short guide to the five popstars featured on ‘Everyone‘!

Name: Jody Williams
Continent: Africa
YouTube: Kiss Of Life
Who: The youngest South African Idol winner ever. With ‘Just Gonna Be Me’ she released one of the best talent show debut albums ever. Be sure to also check out her pop stomper ‘Wind It‘.

Name: Steve Appleton
Continent: Europe
YouTube: City Won’t Sleep (Moto Blanco Radio Edit)
Who: Cute California surfer looking British singer whose guitar pop sounds perfectly pleasant with a Moto Blanco remix on top of it.

Name: Tabitha Nauser
Continent: Asia
YouTube: Halo (Live)
Who: Singapore Idol 2009 alum who seems like she’s on her way to be proper popstar.

Who: Sean Kingston
Continent: America
YouTube: Fire Burning
Who: Often annoying, very occasionally amazing singer from Jamaica.

Name: Jessica Mauboy
Continent: Oceania
YouTube: Burn
Who: Former Australian Idol contestant and Young Divas singer who had a truckload of brilliant hits from her ‘Been Waiting’ album.

Charley says SONG! Betty – Déjà Vu

May 5, 2010

AATW has just uploaded Inna’s ‘Déjà Vu‘ video to their YouTube channel. Now don’t get me wrong, I love this little Eastern European popstar that could. She took Europe by surprise with ‘Hot‘ and is one of the front runners in the current Romanian pop invasion. However, it does slightly annoy me to hear yet another song mispronouncing the word ‘déjà vu’. Beyoncé, I’m looking at you as well.

Once and for all, people, ‘déjà vu’ DOESN’T rhyme with ‘you’. ‘Rendez-vous’ does, ‘déjà vu’ doesn’t. There.

One track that does get it right is the Betty song posted above. ‘Déjà Vu‘ was the last track on the Flemish ‘Big Brother’ superstar’s debut album. It sounds very different to the rest of ‘Come To Me‘, which mainly consisted of your average 2001 pop.

Basically, ‘Déjà Vu‘ couldn’t be more of an ‘Encore Une Fois‘ rip-off if it tried. It’s all there: the French spoken word intro, the techno synths and the title shouted as a chorus. That doesn’t stop it from being slightly brilliant though. Bonus points for the fake French accent on the English verses, Betty’s infamous laugh at the end and, well, apparently being the only person in pop to know how to pronounce ‘déjà vu’.
