Charley says VIDEO! – Kate Ryan – Robots

May 14, 2012

Kate Ryan is one third of Charley says POP!’s Holy Trinity. Alongside Hadise and Katerine Avgoustakis she is, to me, one of the best popstars Belgium has given the world. So naturally seeing Kate release a brand new music video is a PRETTY BIG DEAL.

And boy, does she deliver! Kate is honestly looking in-cre-di-ble. She’s been mostly pants-less throughout this campaign (just check her last two videos) but for ‘Robots‘ she ups the sexy even more. There’s a very flattering futuristic/space/robot corset! There’s a skintight catsuit! There’s an awesome looking headgear thingy! And I’ll try to contain my not-so-secret inner fanboy before I start complementing hair and make-up as well.

Even more importantly, it’s a bit of a brilliant pop tune, isn’t it? The track has been written by Paul Drew, Greig Watts and Pete Barringer, who have previously been responsible for Kate’s ‘LoveLife‘ and Katerine Avgoustakis’ 2006 Eurosong entry. ‘Robots‘ has Kate sounding more pop than ever before, like how it might sound if Daze were to sample ‘Living On Video‘ by Trans-X in the year 3000.

Bring on that album!

‘Robots’ by Kate Ryan and its Extended Radio Edit, Shutterz Remix, Chris Feelding Remix and William Burstedt Remix is available on SpotifySoundcloud and iTunes.

Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music – Update

March 14, 2012

Just a couple of days ago I brought you up to speed on everything that’s happening on the Belgian dance scene and already there’s new things for me to report on! So without further ado, an update!

When we last spoke only a preview of Jessy’s 2012 remake of her classic “Innocence” had been online. Now, I can present you the diva’s shiny new video for “Innocence ’12“! Having heard the full thing now, we can assure you that producer Regi has found a way to make Abie Flinstone‘s rap blend in seemlessly with all the things you loved about the original song. And yes, the epic “it feels so good… come on and take me” bit is still there!

Oh, and be sure to compare my earlier write-up of the song with the YouTube description for the “Innocence ’12” video! Someone at Jessy’s label Mostiko must be reading Charley says POP!

There may not be a video for her group Sylver’s new single “City Of Angels” yet, but Silvy De Bie has shot scenes for her latest solo song. The result of that is now on YouTube! Newly redhead Silvy looks gorgeous in the video for “Without You” which is credited to David Latour ft. Sil!

Lastly, here’s one I missed out on in my previous post. You may recognise Elisa Guarraci from her time on Topmodel, her 2008 Eurovision effort or her audition for The Voice Van Vlaanderen. These days though she’s mainly busy with her girlgroup Fourlicious, who are promoting “Over You” and are said to be working with former Lasgo co-producer Dave McCullen on new material.

In between all of that she’s found the time to record “In My Arms“. The song marks the Belgian/Italian singer’s second collaboration with producer Philip D. Earlier the two worked together on the breezy “When Love Takes Over” soundalike “The Last Goodbye“.

So there you go, until further notice, consider yourself updated on the main new releases in Belgian dance music!

“The Ultimate Jessy: Best Of 1995 – 2012″ by Jessy is available on iTunes and Spotify.
“Innocence ’12″ by Jessy ft. Abie Flinstone is available on iTunes.
“Without You” by David Latour ft. Sil is available on iTunes.
“In My Arms” by Philip D ft. Elisa is available soon.

Charley says VIDEO! Tom Dice – Utopia

March 13, 2012

For “Utopia“, the lead single of his upcoming sophomore album, X Factor 2008 runner-up Tom Dice has rejoined forces with Jeroen Swinnen and Ashley Hicklin. You may remember how the three of them wrote the lovely “Me And My Guitar” which went on to become the most successful Flemish entry in Eurovision history.

I had the pleasure of accompanying Tom a couple of times when he was promoting “Il Nous Faut“, his gorgeous duet with French singer Elisa Tovati. He’s genuinely a nice guy who loves what he’s doing and doesn’t mind working hard to get there, even when he was ill on some of those aforementioned promo dates!

With Tom being the biggest success story of his label and keeping in mind how much I liked his first album, I have high hopes for whatever he comes up with next!

“Utopia” by Tom Dice is available on iTunes.

Charley says ARTICLE! Life After Jameerah

July 13, 2011

Tanja Dexters had been trying to make it in the music business for years.

While her early noughties dance cover of ‘Born To Be Wild’ is still her highest charting single to date, she’d never really recovered from a disastrous attempt at Eurovision glory in 2002.

That is until 2008 when this Belgian blonde wanted to prove once and for all that she could sing. The Thomas G:Son penned ‘Addicted To You‘ got her a place in the Eurosong 2008 final and finally kickstarted her musical plans.

Tanja decided to form Jameerah, an international celebrity girl group. Originally called Models & Misses, the group consisted of Tanja, herself Miss Belgium 1998, Belgian Topmodel contestant Elisa Guarraci, Dutch actress Jasmine Sendar and former Miss Germany Nelly Marie Bojahr.

The summer of 2009 saw the release of Jameerah’s first hit. Catchy pop tune ‘All Eyes On Me‘ had previously been recorded by boyband MaddHouse, but with Bill Padley on production duties Tanja & co. were the first to take it to the charts.

After their first single peaked at 25 the girls got themselves another top 50 hit with ‘Stickup‘. Two versions of their sophomore video were made, one for the Les BoyZ remix and one for the main radio edit.

This is where things started falling apart for the foursome. Promotion for ‘Stickup‘ was interrupted by Tanja’s pregnancy. Rather than get on with a third Jameerah single after her maternity leave, their manager got Tanja her own post-baby reality show.

In the end she and manager Dany Peleman could no longer agree on their plans for the future. The two parted ways after eleven years of working together.

Tanja’s first project without a manager was B-A-B-E, somehow short for Blonde Ambition Babes. She was joined by model Griet Vanhees and Lesley-Ann Poppe, best known for her prominent cleavage on the Belgian version of Come Dine With Me. The trio recorded the cheeky ‘(Itsie Bitsie Boe) Geef Maar Lekker Toe!‘. Naughty lyrics, a (literally) homemade choreography and a 2011 beat with some Luv’ influences thrown in for good measure got B-A-B-E a whole lot of press. Sales however were less than stellar and the trio got dropped by their label shortly after.

Still keen on a proper pop career, Tanja was hoping to pick things up with Jameerah where they left them in the summer of 2010. However, since their former manager owns the group name, the four girls were forced to reinvent theirselves.

Tanja, Jasmine, Elisa and Nelly finally decided on the name Fourlicious. New music from the band formerly known as Jameerah isn’t online yet, but their Twitter and Facebook accounts will keep you updated on their progress.

If, however, one fourth of the group is enough to tide you over until the first Fourlicious release then you’re in luck. Elisa Guarraci is making a third foray into solo stardom, having previously been a contestant on Topmodel and Eurosong. On ‘The Last Goodbye‘ the Belgian/Italian singer has teamed up with Philip D, producer of ‘Stickup‘ and the ‘All Eyes On Me’ video edit. Together with David Vervoort, formerly behind Lasgo, he wrote Elisa her own trance anthem.

Elisa really delivers on this ‘When Love Takes Over’ inspired track. I wouldn’t have minded ‘The Last Goodbye‘ being a Fourlicious song one bit. In fact, let’s just edit in some shots of the other girls and BAM, you’ve got your big Fourlicious hit!

Charley says VIDEO! A Butterfly Mind – Lonely Heart On Wheels

April 7, 2011

Cappaert sisters Annelies and Sarah first came to Belgium’s attention in Idool 2004, went on to be runners-up in X Factor 2005 as a duo and changed their name to A Butterfly Mind for their first album campaign a couple of years later.

This is their Eurosong 2008 entry ‘Lonely Heart On Wheels‘.

Just because.

Charley says SONG! Nelson Moraïs – She’s So Lonely

March 23, 2011

Charley says POP! favourite Nelson Moraïs is back with another great dance track!

I told you earlier how Nelson went from being his sister’s background singer to Eurosong hopeful to Belgium’s smoothest voiced male dance star.

Last I heard an album was in the works for release in 2011, but at the rate he’s going he might have released himself an entire Best Of before you know it. Not that we’re complaining!

As far as I can tell from the writing credits, his latest gem sees Nelson stepping out of his Daniel Bovie produced comfort zone.

Instead, ‘She’s So Lonely‘ was co-written by Yves Gaillard.

The two previously worked together on ‘She’s Gone‘ and with a track record to Yves’ name that includes Hadise, Kate Ryan and Katerine Avgoustakis I’m not even sure why you’re still reading this instead of clicking the play button above like a mad man!

Charley says VIDEO! Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox vs. Ricky Rivaro ft. Nelson – My Destiny

November 21, 2010

So this is the confusing new Nelson Moraïs single!

Not confusing in its quality, as it’s quite clearly on the amazing side of things, but as to exactly what project this new release belongs.

I introduced you earlier to Nelson, brother of Elsie Moraïs and Eurosong 2008 participant.

Now last Friday he was on Peter Live, singing a medley of ‘Love Me‘, ‘She’s Gone‘ and ‘Stop Playing With My Mind‘. This was the first Nelson surprise of the weekend for me. I’d never realised that it was him doing vocals on that last song!

As I was doing a bit of digging around on the Ultratop site, I stumbled upon ‘My Destiny‘. I assumed it was another old track, but as it turns out it’s a brand new single! Once again it’s produced by Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox, but this time with the help of Ricky Rivaro.

Now here’s where it  gets confusing. Nelson had mentioned after this week’s tv performance that he’s working an album for early next year and that a new single was coming up soon. Would that be ‘My Destiny’ then? One would assume so, but then why doesn’t Nelson get a mention on the single sleeve?

In fact, the credits for Nelson’s entire discography since signing with Mostiko are all over the place!

Nelson – She’s Gone
Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox vs. Ricky Rivaro – My Destiny

It’s an OCD iTunes tagger’s ultimate nightmare!

And that’s not even including the two tracks he did for ‘Registrated 2’. ‘Imagination‘ and ‘Now You’re Gone‘ are credited as Regi & Nelson and I can definitely see them popping up on the album. Be it the original versions or, as was the case with Katerine’s ‘Back Off‘, in remixed form.

I guess only time will tell, so as for now let’s just enjoy this rather enjoyable new single and the fact that Nelson’s recording an album. No matter what songs will or will not be included and how they might have to be tagged!

Charley says VIDEO! Aleksander With ft. Lene Marlin, Sandrine & Nikki – Worth It

October 7, 2010

Aleksander With took Norway by storm when he became the youngest Idol winner ever in 2006.

His debut single ‘A Little Too Perfect‘ shot to the top of the charts, with follow-up ‘The Other Side‘ getting to an impressive number two a couple of months later.

These days Aleksander is already up to his second top five album and is looking to make it big outside of his own country.

To make this happen Sony is launching him abroad with the song that got him another Norwegian top three hit. ‘Worth It‘ was originally a duet with Lene Marlin, who is also a co-writer on the accompanying album ‘Still Awake’. It goes without saying that Lene is still as lovely as ever.

However, for the Belgian and Dutch releases Aleksander has teamed up with some local talent to cover Lene’s lines.

Sandrine came third in Idool 2004, but her music career outlasted both finalists Joeri and Wouter. Her biggest hits in Belgium include ‘Goosebumps‘ and the Eurosong 2008 entry ‘I Feel The Same Way‘. Sandrine spent last summer promoting ‘Run Away‘ and packing her bags for a trip to America from which she hopes to return with a third album ready. A sample of her rendition of ‘Worth It’ can be found here.

The singer to take on Lene’s vocals for the Dutch market is, just like Aleksander and Sandrine, an Idols alum. Nikki Kerkhof has left the sound of her 2008 winner’s single ‘Hello World‘ behind and is now The Netherlands’ hardest rocking talent show winner. Her two albums were fronted by pop/rock anthems like ‘Bring Me Down‘ and the Guy Chambers and Busbee penned ‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You‘. The full Dutch version of ‘Worth It’ had his radio premiere, but isn’t up on YouTube yet. For now though, there’s the sample below.

I’m curious to see if the addition of these two Charley says POP! favourites will do the trick for Aleksander in the Benelux. I for one hope it does!

Oh, and while you’re at it, Aleksander, how about local versions for France, Spain, Germany, Italy and so on?

PS: Look out for the interview I had with Nikki a couple of weeks ago, coming soon to Charley says POP!

Charley says ARTIST! Simon Sinnaeve

October 1, 2010

Because every self respecting tv channel needs its own talent show, TMF launched Wanna Sing? in 2007.

The Flemish music channel used the same concept as it did for Rate The Video and Rate The VJ. While each contestant does their bit, viewers get to text in their comments and a score from 0 to 10. The person with the highest average score gets to progress.

The show attracted some familiar faces like Popstars and Eurosong 2008 contestant Kenza. Also taking part was Miss Belgian Beauty finalist Tamara Opdebeeck, who was already recording as Noa Neal and went on the be the runner-up in ‘K2 Zoekt K3’ in 2009.

However, there can only be one winner and for Wanna Sing? that was Simon Sinnaeve.

The West-Flemish boy won a performance at the TMF Awards and got to release ‘Your Eyes‘.

Simon Sinnaeve, popstar and Belgium’s first national beerpong champion.

While the song isn’t particularly spectacular, I do love this pop/rock-ish tune. It’s refreshing to have a winner’s single that sounds current enough, fits the singer well and has a lovely looking video. Three points not many Belgian talent show debuts manage to tick off!

Wanna Sing? being on a small channel may not have stopped the product from being a bit amazing, but it did mean few people got to know about Simon’s music career. ‘Your Eyes‘ unfortunately never made it out of the Bubbling Under chart.

With no plans for a second single at Universal, Simon took to MySpace profiles and various YouTube accounts to have his voice be heard. An overview of his many projects can be found here on what I’m assuming is his personal MySpace.

Earlier this year he uploaded a video onto the SonicAngel and Joepie Talent Booth site. A girl by the name of Laura van den Bruel beat him to the top spot of the competition, but does this video shot at the SonicAngel studios indicate that Tom Dice’s label has a spot ready for Simon?

We may still be waiting for news on his music, but Simon was in the papers just a couple of days ago! What for? He hosted and won the very first Belgian beerpong championship.

That was a bit random.

Charley says EUROVISION! Junior Eurosong 2010

September 4, 2010

This year’s Belgian national Junior Eurovision selection has been bumped from main public channel één to the kids oriented Ketnet. To ease the pain we’re getting videos for every entry now, whereas in previous years even the winners could consider themselves lucky if they got more than their live performance dubbed with the studio track.

So who am I backing to win? Well, based on the studio versions there’s three songs that really stand out for me.

First up, and the one I think will be most likely to get the approval of Charley says POP! visitors, is ‘Get Up!‘ by Jill & Lauren. Both first stepped into the limelight as part of KetnetPOP 3. KetnetPOP is a yearly album and concert series that has former Junior Eurosong stars and new talent release music together.

Jill & Lauren’s entry is probably the most proper pop song of the bunch and seems like it could have just as easily been recorded by Bo & Monica. Actually, ‘Get Up!‘ was co-written by Miguel Wiels, who was also responsible for Bo & Monica’s ‘Gonna Be A Star‘.

Then there’s Ferre. This 14-year-old easily has the best voice of the bunch. I love his pop/rock song, but if the JESC efforts of Oliver and Trust have proven us anything, it’s that Europe doesn’t seem to like it when we send in this kind of song. However, I’m pretty sure ‘(Met Mijn) Ogen Toe‘ is the one song I’ll keep coming back to in the years to come.

On production and co-writing duties is Jeroen Swinnen, who also had a hand in Tom Dice’s wildly successful Eurovision entry ‘Me And My Guitar‘. One last pop connection Ferre has going on is that his video was shot at the same place in Antwerp as Idool 2003 winner Peter Evrard’s debut video ‘For You’.

Finally, ‘Power Aan De Kids!‘ is my third favourite. Daan & Anne-Sophie of DnA penned this ‘So What‘ sounding anthem together with former Nailpin frontman Sean D’Hondt.

Other notable collaborators are Ingrid Mank and Born Crain on Ymke’s ‘Vive La Fête‘, Katerine Avgoustakis’ producer Yannic Fonderie and Flemish X Factor winner Udo on Ine’s ‘Kusje Van Mij‘ and actor / Eurosong 2006 contestant Tom Van Landuyt who co-wrote this year’s super catchy group song ‘Superidee‘.
