Charley says VIDEO! Eva Simons – Renegade

June 16, 2012

By now you’re surely familiar with Dutch pop promise Eva Simons (and if you’re not, there’s always this post I made some time ago to bring you up to date!) Since we last saw her, the mohawked singer has teamed up with Will.I.Am, toured with LMFAO and is preparing to join Eric Prydz, Nero and the likes for their Identity Tour.

Even more importantly though, this week we’re one step closer to that long awaited debut album! Eva has unleashed her brand new video “Renegade“, which frankly features some of the worst road safety in pop. Eyes on the road, Eva! Hands on the wheel! No standing on the motorbike!

The song however is top notch. Eva sings “Success is being who you are… and you only… Me, I’m a renegade” over dubstep pop done right. Yes, after taking on the dance scene with the likes of Afrojack and Zedd by her side, Eva is now coming for Katy B’s crown!

“Renegade” by Eva Simons is available soon.

Charley says ALBUM! Rochelle – You vs. Me

April 4, 2012

There’s few words that make pop fans run for the hills faster than “authentic” and “guitars”. However, you might want to stick around for Rochelle’s debut album because it is very very good indeed. Rochelle has a natural popstar edginess to her and injects attitude into a brilliantly in-your-face album.

In 2011 Rochelle became the fourth Dutch X Factor winner and released a stripped down cover of Jordin Sparks’ epic “No Air”. With coach and producer Eric van Tijn firmly by her side she set out looking for the perfect sound to build her album around. For the next year a whole bunch of demos were recorded and a whole lot of different styles were tried out. At one point she teamed up with The Partysquad for the club/R&B-tinged theme to dance movie “Body Language”.

However, as I heard people from her label say on a Sony Music Benelux event where I saw Rochelle perform, in the end she decided: “You know what? Just give me a band to rock out with”. With her musical direction finally set in stone, everything quickly fell into place. Having carefully selected songs written by, among others, the people behind Sabrina Starke, Rochelle and a bunch of musicians got into the studio. Eric van Tijn was aided on production duties by the likes of Tearce ‘Kizzo’ Keaz of ‘Silly Boy‘ fame.

The first of the resulting songs we got to hear was lead single “What A Life“. The track takes the best bits about Jessie J and scrapes off the shiny pop gloss, till all that’s left is a raw yet approachable and damn catchy tune. Upcoming follow-up single “Untouchable” was created by Emeli Sandé and is a full-on anthem. Think “My December” era Kelly Clarkson. It’s not the only epic moment on the album “You vs. Me”, with the goosebumps inducing chorus of “Talking To My Shadow” as one of many examples.

In fact, Rochelle has opted to pack the entire album with as much power as possible. The only thing that comes close to a ballad is “Mummy’s Boy“, a musical fuck you to the man in the title that sounds reminiscent of Shontelle’s “Impossible”. On other tracks, like “Chasing Fire“, Rochelle has a touch of Gossip to her, while the verses of “Little Miss Unhappy” fit right in with Gotye. In the end though, all these influences combined result in the album being 100% Rochelle and 100% amazing.

“What A Life” by Rochelle is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says SONG! Eva Simons – I Don’t Like You

March 21, 2012

She’s back!

Eva Simons has unleashed her new single “I Don’t Like You“, which is set to follow in the successful footsteps of her Afrojack collaboration “Take Over Control“. Behind this club banger are the capable hands of Zedd, German producer Anton Zaslavski whose Lady Gaga remix was featured on the Deluxe Edition of “Born This Way”.

Eva Simons first popped onto the music scene in 2004 when she was a contestant on Popstars: The Rivals in The Netherlands. She was voted into girlgroup Raffish who went on to release one album and three singles before disbanding.

Eva started working on music of her own and then finally in 2009 she stepped into the spotlight again. First as the resident singer on Dutch Dancing With The Stars, then as a popstar in her own right.

Her debut single “Silly Boy” leaked as a rumoured Rihanna & Lady Gaga duet. By the time it became clear that Eva was behind the track, it had picked up so much steam that she was signed to EMI for an international release.

Despite recording a truckload of tracks which (as we learned from the leaks) were all kinds of awesome, the project stalled and Eva parted ways with her label.

Now, one of the most promising popstars of The Netherlands has finally returned, with a brand new deal with Interscope to her name.

If “I Don’t Like You” is anything to go by, those years of waiting won’t have been in vain!

“I Don’t Like You” by Eva Simons will be available online as of March 26th.
The HalfStyle remix of “I Don’t Like You” by Eva Simons is available on Soundcloud.

Charley says WEEK! 2010.19

May 16, 2010

Move over, Jasper Erkens and Freaky Age. Here’s Breathe The Sound! Above is lead singer Simon Nuytten. Below is their song ‘Dance‘. Over here is a live cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man In The Mirror‘. And this is the band’s MySpace profile. This isn’t usually my kind of music, but I find myself liking this quite a bit.

Charley says LIST! 3 Unlikely Yet Rather Amazing Samples

May 15, 2010

1. Song: Lumidee – Insomnia
Sample: Faithless – Insomnia
About: The Queen of Spanish Harlem is back! Over the past few years Lumidee has been making sure that’s she’s not going to be the ‘Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)‘ girl for the rest of her life. I’m particularly fond of her Speedy collaboration ‘Sientelo‘. (“Classy, but sexy without no tongue ring […] Straight from the gutter, but I shine like a pearl”) With a cheeky “They say God is a DJ” added, this new song is the best use of ‘Insomnia’ since the 2003 TMF Awards opening performance.

2. Song: The Crybabies – Wherever I Go
Sample: Zombie Nation – Kernkraft 400
About: Looks like someone Eva Simons’ed Eva Simons herself! The former ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ winner shot to international fame when ‘Silly Boy‘ was leaked as a Lady Gaga and Rihanna demo. ‘Wherever I Go‘ just hit the web as Eva’s alleged new single. However, a little digging revealed that it’s actually The Crybabies who get to take credit for it!

3. Song: Auburn – La La La
Sample: ATC – Around The World (La La La La La)
About: Auburn, formerly known as Gabby G, is already being dubbed the Princess of Beluga Heights. J.R. Rotem seems to be on a roll when it comes to sampling. After Jason Derülo’s Imogen Heap-sampling ‘Whatcha Say‘ he turned the cheesy (yet nonetheless amazing) ‘Around The World (La La La La La)‘ by German pop group ATC into a proper R&B tune.

Charley says LIST! Now That’s What I Call 2009!

February 22, 2010

A couple of months ago I compiled my very first end of year list ever. What I did was take my 50 most played songs that were released in 2009, pick out my favourites and rearrange them for the perfect flow. I tried to not go for the usual suspects, so that I’d end up with a list that’s very… me.

You may have seen this list before, but I thought it would make for a perfect first post that indicates what you can expect here in the future.

Enjoy!
