Charley says VIDEO! Pearl – Like A Video Game

April 24, 2011

I jumped up out of my seat in excitement when I spotted this!

Nearly a year ago I interviewed dance producer Peter Luts in anticipation of his new talent show Looking For Pearl. A year earlier he’d found a new singer for his best known project, Lasgo, through a similar contest. This time round the goal was to start up something entirely new.

Some well known faces came to audition, Marjolein Lecluyze being one of them. You may remember her as part of the ill-fated group Popz, but she is best known for the music she released in 2006 and 2007. Singles like ‘Luister Naar M’n Hart‘ en ‘Kamer‘ may have been aimed at kids, but with Milk Inc.’s Regi on production duties I can’t deny playing the hell out of these songs.

Another known face was Charlotte Buyl. A couple of years earlier she’d made her first steps in the music business as part of Miss Behave on the Tom Dice season of X Factor. The group lost two members when they were booted out of the competition and after Charlotte decided to quit the band as well, the two remaining members formed Glamm. Free to pursue solo ambitions Charlotte entered Looking For Pearl.

The two girls made it to the final, with Charlotte taking the prize in the end.

Together with two dancers who were chosen on the show as well, she was now the face of Pearl.

The video for ‘Speechless‘, their very first single, was released soon after the contest ended. The Peter Luts produced dance track did pretty well in the charts, and deservedly so, as Charlotte delivers on the song’s awesome chorus.

Now, about seven months later, Pearl is finally back for music video number two.

Like A Video Game‘ has Charlotte strutting through Movie Park Germany, with none other than Pacman as love interest. The song may take a couple of listens, but will lodge itself firmly into your head.

And one thing’s for sure, it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to those Peter Luts synths.

Charley says VIDEO! David Latour, Hi-Mode & Narco – Venus vs. Mars

April 15, 2011

DJ David Latour has teamed up with Hi-Mode, formerly of Les Mecs, and together with Narco they’ve released ‘Venus vs. Mars‘.

This club track sounds like the Belgian equivalent to Swedish House Mafia and is not only starting to make an impact in here, the rest of the world is taking notice as well. The song got signed to Spinnin’ Records in The Netherlands and is gaining momentum in Denmark.

Even Kate Ryan is a fan! She posted the video on her official Facebook page and expressed an interest in working with the trio.

After Laurent Wery’s ‘Hey Hey Hey‘, this is upcoming dance label La Musique Du Beau Monde’s second release to go international.

LMDBM were also the people behind Glamm, the dance/pop duo I told you about a year ago, and Jessy’s Michael Beltran collaboration ‘Can’t Get Enough‘.

Charley says LIST! If You’re Only Just Joining Us

May 26, 2010

I am very excited to have gotten a mention on Don’t Stop The Pop‘s ‘Blog Love‘!

I’ve been reading DSTP for a while now. It’s the blog that introduced me to Agnes, Elouise and Pauline, to name just a few acts. It’s also the blog that I hope I can achieve the same level of ongoing quality as.

For those of you who’ve now come here for the first time, be it thanks to DSTP or for any other reason, I wanted to fill you in on what I’ve been doing these last few months.

Over the last few days I’ve been posting the eight parts of Oslo 2010 In A Tweet, a Eurovision review which I’ve absolutely loved doing with my equally as ESC obsessed friends MadeInHeaven and Greg Baker.

However, these posts have left this page a bit clogged up. So without further ado, here’s a sample of what you’ll find beyond the first page of Charley says POP!

Charley says ARTIST! Axeela
[http://tinyurl.com/34qmepa]
Why: I think Axeela might just be the next big popstar from Belgium.

Charley says LIST! Ke$ha: The Clone Wars
[http://tinyurl.com/34mjt5e]
Why: This post got picked up by StumbleUpon, it’s an introduction to some great lesser known pop acts who may have been a little influenced by the current Ke$ha craze.

Charley says SONG! Glamm – Overheated
[http://tinyurl.com/32snq2c]
Why: I love talent show acts and former popstars who decide to give it another go. Especially if the result is as good as this ‘Evacuate The Dancefloor’ sounding pop tune.

Charley says VIDEO! Cinérex – Bring Up The Sun
[http://tinyurl.com/38ooyyb]
Why: It’s fun to piece together information about a brilliant act that seemed to have gone unnoticed by the internet. It took me some time to collect all the facts, but this is one of my favourite posts.

Charley says ARTIST! Harel Skaat
[http://tinyurl.com/ybbwx93]
Why: You may have noticed that this blog has extra attention for, as DSTP put it, Benelux Pop. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t like to discover artists from all over the globe. A perfect example is this post I wrote on this year’s Israeli Eurovision contestant Harel Skaat.

Charley says WEEK!
Why: Since a couple of weeks I do a roundup on Sunday of all the posts I put up in the last seven days. Accompanied by a video that hasn’t yet made it on the blog, it’s a nice way to catch up with the pop you may have missed.

I hope that you have may have found something you like on Charley says POP! I’ve got some exciting stuff planned for the blog, so I hope that you come back soon. For those of you who have already been reading along these last months, I hope you keep coming back!

Thank you for visiting!

Charley says SONG! Glamm – Overheated

April 25, 2010

Glamm are basically what LoveShy would have sounded like doing their own version of Cascada’s ‘Evacuate The Dancefloor‘.

Even their backstories read the same. Glamm started out in 2008 as Miss Behave, a girl group put together at the bootcamp stage of Flemish X Factor. Despite being coached by Dutch popstar Do their live show performances of songs like ‘Sway’ failed to impress and Miss Behave were quickly voted out of the competition.

Two of the original five girls left and Miss Behave tried to make things work as a three piece. Despite booking a couple of performances nothing really came of it and when Charly left things seemed to be all over. However, Anke and Leïla weren’t about to give up just yet and reinvented themselves as a brand new duo. Sound familiar?

Things finally seem to be looking up for Flanders’ newest popstars now producers Serge Ramaekers and Laurent Wery have taken it upon themselves to provide the girls with their first smash hit. Serge is the guy who brought us pop gems like Fatty K’s ‘Sophisticated‘ and Laurent Wery just had a couple of hits of his own.

Serge was also the key to finding out why the rap in ‘Overheated‘ sounds so familiar. It had been bugging me for hours since I first heard it. I even dug out some Leki, Kaye Styles and Raw Jawz songs in hope of stumbling upon it. It wasn’t until I was reading through Serge’s credentials that it dawned on me that the rap was copy/pasted from former ‘Temptation Island’ temptress Amina’s one and only single ‘Hey Boy‘! (A song which, by the way, is infinitely better in its Nils Van Zandt Remix form).

In any case, copy/pasted or not, it works. The production on ‘Overheated‘ is tight and even though the girls’ voices are drowned in autotune their recent acoustic performance shows that they do have the talent to back it all up.

If Anke and Leïla go on like this we should be expecting a whole lot more amazing pop from Glamm in the future.
