Charley says VIDEO! Aleksander With ft. Lene Marlin, Sandrine & Nikki – Worth It

October 7, 2010

Aleksander With took Norway by storm when he became the youngest Idol winner ever in 2006.

His debut single ‘A Little Too Perfect‘ shot to the top of the charts, with follow-up ‘The Other Side‘ getting to an impressive number two a couple of months later.

These days Aleksander is already up to his second top five album and is looking to make it big outside of his own country.

To make this happen Sony is launching him abroad with the song that got him another Norwegian top three hit. ‘Worth It‘ was originally a duet with Lene Marlin, who is also a co-writer on the accompanying album ‘Still Awake’. It goes without saying that Lene is still as lovely as ever.

However, for the Belgian and Dutch releases Aleksander has teamed up with some local talent to cover Lene’s lines.

Sandrine came third in Idool 2004, but her music career outlasted both finalists Joeri and Wouter. Her biggest hits in Belgium include ‘Goosebumps‘ and the Eurosong 2008 entry ‘I Feel The Same Way‘. Sandrine spent last summer promoting ‘Run Away‘ and packing her bags for a trip to America from which she hopes to return with a third album ready. A sample of her rendition of ‘Worth It’ can be found here.

The singer to take on Lene’s vocals for the Dutch market is, just like Aleksander and Sandrine, an Idols alum. Nikki Kerkhof has left the sound of her 2008 winner’s single ‘Hello World‘ behind and is now The Netherlands’ hardest rocking talent show winner. Her two albums were fronted by pop/rock anthems like ‘Bring Me Down‘ and the Guy Chambers and Busbee penned ‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You‘. The full Dutch version of ‘Worth It’ had his radio premiere, but isn’t up on YouTube yet. For now though, there’s the sample below.

I’m curious to see if the addition of these two Charley says POP! favourites will do the trick for Aleksander in the Benelux. I for one hope it does!

Oh, and while you’re at it, Aleksander, how about local versions for France, Spain, Germany, Italy and so on?

PS: Look out for the interview I had with Nikki a couple of weeks ago, coming soon to Charley says POP!

Charley says VIDEO! Hind – Don’t Leave Me Behind

August 29, 2010

You’ve probably read how Ruth Lorenzo is getting her fans to fund her album. It might be a good idea for her to give Dutch singer Hind a call for advice.

In just 11 days Hind managed to collect €40.000 on Sellaband.com to put towards her third album.

Hind Laroussi became a household name on the very first Dutch season of Idols. To this day I still dig up the ‘Idols: Greatest Moments’ album every once in a while to listen to her Robbie Williams cover ‘Feel‘.

She went on to release two albums, fronted by hits like ‘Summer All Over Again‘ and ‘Give Me A Sign‘. In 2008 she represented The Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Your Heart Belongs To Me‘.

Now, Hind is getting ready for the October release of her third album ‘Crosspop’. Steve Power, who has previously worked with the likes of Robbie and Kylie, took on production duties. If you’re curious about the result, you can already check out song samples here under ‘Geluidsfragmenten’.

Though perhaps the best taster for the album is ‘Don’t Leave Me Behind‘. This lead single represents what I’m expecting from the album, not necessarily songs that go out with a bang, but a musical atmosphere to get soaked in. With its blend of Spanish guitars and a ‘Free Me‘ era Emma Bunton sound, it also gives an idea of what exactly this crosspop might be.

I’m intrigued.

Charley says TV! My Camp Rock

July 7, 2010

Yesterday I spent some time watching the audition episodes of My Camp Rock on the Belgian Disney Channel site.

My Camp Rock is a co-production between Belgium and The Netherlands. Inspired by the movie of the same name the show is looking for a new kid or teen singing sensation. The show is hosted by talent show veterans Dean and Sita. Dean won Idool 2007 in Flanders, while Sita won a place in the band K-Otic on the Dutch show Starmaker back in 2001. Head of the judges is vocal coach Babette Labeij, who works on all the big Dutch talent shows. Earlier this year she released an album of her own, fronted by the amazing pop/rock single ‘Stupid Woman’.

Local adaptations of My Camp Rock have already aired on various Disney Channels around the world. British winner Holly-Anne Hull got her trophy handed to her by Demi Lovato and Martina Russomanno from Italy was even joined by Joe Jonas himself on winner’s song ‘This Is Me‘. I only found one series where a duo won. Cynthia and Félix released a translated cover of ‘We Rock‘ after winning the French version of My Camp Rock.

It’ll be a while before we find out who wins for Belgium and The Netherlands, as for some reason the next few episodes will only air at the end of August. What we do know is that there is some Junior Eurovision talent taking another shot at stardom. Among the participants were duo Cheyenne & Mayleen, who reached the Dutch national final in 2009 with ‘Druk‘. Also present were semi-finalist Haruka and runner-up Manou from Belgian Junior Eurosong 2009.

While we’re talking Camp Rock, my favourite cover from this movie has to be Nikki’s version of ‘This Is Me‘. Having just won Idols at the time, the Dutch singer recorded this video to promote the movie’s then upcoming release.

Move over, Jasper Erkens and Freaky Age. Here’s Breathe The Sound! Above is lead singer Simon Nuytten. Below is their song ‘Dance‘. Over here is a live cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man In The Mirror‘. And this is the band’s MySpace profile. This isn’t usually my kind of music, but I find myself liking this quite a bit.

Charley says LIST! 3 Small Updates

May 16, 2010

1) Nikki‘s ‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You‘ has a video now. It looks a bit like Ida Maria’s ‘I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked‘.

2) The studio version of ‘I Am‘ by Tom Helsen presents Barbara Dex is up on YouTube.

3) The video for Monrose‘s ‘Like A Lady‘ is online. The album cover is as brilliant as the single cover, by the way.

Charley says SONG! Bliss – Buttons (Live)

May 6, 2010

Back in 2003 Dewi came fourth in the first season of ‘Idols’. She went on to release ‘Left Of Center‘, one of my favourite songs to come out of a Dutch talent show. Earlier this year she returned to tv on the second season of ‘Popstars’. She was one of the Mystery Popstars, established singers who auditioned anonymously. Her identity remained hidden from the audience and judges until the liveshows. In the end Dewi narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

The singer’s not one to sit around and do nothing though. She went back to hosting her Dewi’s Jam concerts,  a regular event where her musician friends come over for some great performances together.

On the most recent Jam night Dewi performed with Anna Speller and Bouchra Tjon Pong Fong as Bliss. You may remember these ladies from K-Otic, the band that came out of Starmaker. Below is the video of Dewi, Anna and Bouchra doing a lovely laid-back version of ‘Buttons’, originally by the Pussycat Dolls.

As much as I’m looking forward to new material from Dewi, I definitely wouldn’t mind hearing what these three ladies could come up with in a studio together.

Charley says SONG! Nikki – Can’t Stop Thinking About You

May 4, 2010

I’m super excited about Nikki’s ‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You‘!

For the second single of her upcoming album ‘Let It Go‘ the Dutch ‘Idols’ winner stepped it up a notch. Now I was personally a big fan of her Kelly Clarkson ‘Breakaway’-era sounding songs. ‘Bring Me Down‘ was one of the most amazing songs of 2008 and I’ve been screaming my heart out to Nikki’s last single ‘Perfect Day‘ for the last few months.

However, I’m happy to see her change direction a bit when the result is this catchy. Gone is the Dutch Kelly Clarkson, meet the Dutch P!nk. ‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You‘ was written by Guy Chambers and Busbee, the guy behind Alexandra Burke’s ‘Bad Boys‘. It’s ridiculously uptempo and I dare anyone not to at least tap their feet along.

Expect a full Charley says ARTIST! profile on Nikki soon!

Charley says LIST! Now That’s What I Call 2009!

February 22, 2010

A couple of months ago I compiled my very first end of year list ever. What I did was take my 50 most played songs that were released in 2009, pick out my favourites and rearrange them for the perfect flow. I tried to not go for the usual suspects, so that I’d end up with a list that’s very… me.

You may have seen this list before, but I thought it would make for a perfect first post that indicates what you can expect here in the future.

Enjoy!
