Charley says VIDEO! Sita & Dean – Wouldn’t Change A Thing

August 14, 2010

Sita: Won herself a place in K-Otic on Dutch talent show Starmaker back in 2001, had some great solo stuff and is now mainly a tv host.

Dean: Won Idool 2007 in Belgium, released two albums, the most recent of which had some surprisingly amazing tracks on there, hosts My Camp Rock with Sita on Disney Channel.

Wouldn’t Change A Thing: A Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas duet from the upcoming movie Camp Rock 2.

The result: Pretty damn amazing.

Charley says TV! My Camp Rock

July 7, 2010

Yesterday I spent some time watching the audition episodes of My Camp Rock on the Belgian Disney Channel site.

My Camp Rock is a co-production between Belgium and The Netherlands. Inspired by the movie of the same name the show is looking for a new kid or teen singing sensation. The show is hosted by talent show veterans Dean and Sita. Dean won Idool 2007 in Flanders, while Sita won a place in the band K-Otic on the Dutch show Starmaker back in 2001. Head of the judges is vocal coach Babette Labeij, who works on all the big Dutch talent shows. Earlier this year she released an album of her own, fronted by the amazing pop/rock single ‘Stupid Woman’.

Local adaptations of My Camp Rock have already aired on various Disney Channels around the world. British winner Holly-Anne Hull got her trophy handed to her by Demi Lovato and Martina Russomanno from Italy was even joined by Joe Jonas himself on winner’s song ‘This Is Me‘. I only found one series where a duo won. Cynthia and Félix released a translated cover of ‘We Rock‘ after winning the French version of My Camp Rock.

It’ll be a while before we find out who wins for Belgium and The Netherlands, as for some reason the next few episodes will only air at the end of August. What we do know is that there is some Junior Eurovision talent taking another shot at stardom. Among the participants were duo Cheyenne & Mayleen, who reached the Dutch national final in 2009 with ‘Druk‘. Also present were semi-finalist Haruka and runner-up Manou from Belgian Junior Eurosong 2009.

While we’re talking Camp Rock, my favourite cover from this movie has to be Nikki’s version of ‘This Is Me‘. Having just won Idols at the time, the Dutch singer recorded this video to promote the movie’s then upcoming release.

Charley says SONG! Bliss – Buttons (Live)

May 6, 2010

Back in 2003 Dewi came fourth in the first season of ‘Idols’. She went on to release ‘Left Of Center‘, one of my favourite songs to come out of a Dutch talent show. Earlier this year she returned to tv on the second season of ‘Popstars’. She was one of the Mystery Popstars, established singers who auditioned anonymously. Her identity remained hidden from the audience and judges until the liveshows. In the end Dewi narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

The singer’s not one to sit around and do nothing though. She went back to hosting her Dewi’s Jam concerts,  a regular event where her musician friends come over for some great performances together.

On the most recent Jam night Dewi performed with Anna Speller and Bouchra Tjon Pong Fong as Bliss. You may remember these ladies from K-Otic, the band that came out of Starmaker. Below is the video of Dewi, Anna and Bouchra doing a lovely laid-back version of ‘Buttons’, originally by the Pussycat Dolls.

As much as I’m looking forward to new material from Dewi, I definitely wouldn’t mind hearing what these three ladies could come up with in a studio together.

Charley says COVER! I Really Don’t Think So

February 26, 2010

My last post on Starmaker got me YouTube’ing some videos of the winning band K-otic. I’ll admit it, I get way too excited when people cover ‘obscure’ pop songs, so I was thrilled to find that the video for K-Otic’s hit ‘I Really Don’t Think So’ linked me to ‘Quién Dice’. It turns out former Mecano lead singer Ana Torroja got her hands on the song in 2003 and turned it into an understated cool little Spanish tune. Some further investigation also brought up a version by Scene 23, the winners of Popstars 2 in the US. Their version keeps all the 2001-ness of the original with an extra bit of added American Popstars cheese.

However you turn it and whichever version you like best, there’s no denying that the “Why does everything have to be a love thing, think of all the sorrow that love brings, is it where you really wanna go, no, I really don’t think so” is one hell of a catchy chorus.

Check out all three versions and pick a favourite, after the jump!

Charley says YOUTUBE! Starmaker – Damn (I Think I Love You)

The amazing @gjkooijman unearthed these two videos, which take us all the way back to 2001 for a look back on Starmaker.

This Dutch Big Brother and Popstars hybrid gave us some of my favourite Dutch popstars and it’s really odd to see them as they were back when it all started. We get to see the finalists in the Starmaker house (which was really just the old Big Brother house with a different logo) hearing ‘Damn (I Think I Love You)’ for the very first time. In the second video we watch them record it in what seems to be the secret dungeon from ‘V For Vendetta’.

‘Damn (I Think I Love You)’ is one of the best reality show singles ever and most definitely the best one to feature all finalists. Check out the end result here!
