Charley says VIDEO! Lasgo – Sky High

May 9, 2012

Lasgo lead singer Jelle may have just had a baby, but she’s not letting that get in the way of being one of the most consistently amazing dance acts in Belgium. ‘Sky High‘ is another surefire classic and between this, AnnaGrace’s ‘Ready To Fall In Love‘ and his own ‘Everyday‘ producer Peter Luts seems unstoppable at the moment! Now all we need is for him to capitalise on Charlotte Buyl’s newfound The Voice fame to revive Pearl and we’ve got all our boxes ticked!

Despite its joyful lyrics ‘Sky High‘ seems to have kind of a melancholic touch to it in an “Oh my God, is this really happening?” kind of way. Then again, if you were in a music video where the plotline is to get Meysam from So You Think You Can Dance shirtless as often as possible you wouldn’t be able to believe your luck either. You’ve stopped reading at “Meysam from So You Think You Can Dance shirtless”, didn’t you? Fair enough.

“Sky High” by Lasgo is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says ARTIST! Dum Dum Club

March 25, 2012

Dum Dum Club is a side project of David Vervoort.

You probably know him best as co-producer and songwriter of Lasgo’s first two albums. In recent years he’s ventured into writing and producing for all kinds of genres, from pop (Fourlicious‘ new tracks) to schlager (most notably the epic “Dos Cervezas” by Tom Waes). David has also had chart success of his very own, with “B*tch” being his biggest hit to date under the moniker Dave McCullen. With the line “I just like to call you my bitch” as the song’s catchy hook and a brilliant video of old people raving to his dance beats, the track got to number 6 back in 2004.

In 2009 David created the first Dum Dum Club release. “I’m Sorry” was a cheerful little pop tune that sees a lover apologising for what he’s done wrong in the hope of getting back together. As he did with the odd Lasgo album track David provided the vocals himself. In the video however he’s nowhere to be seen, with a group of his friends taking to the stage instead. Among them you may recognise former Lasgo singer Evi Goffin, Edmée and Flor from DHT ft. Edmée and Temptation Island contestant turned singer Reshum Van Til!

I have to admit that Dum Dum Club’s second single kind of passed me by when it was first released. “Don’t Go” came out in 2010 and sadly all traces of it seem to have vanished from YouTube since. It is however available on Spotify, where you can hear David’s sad tale of lost love set to summer-y reggae-light beats. Think crying into your cocktail at a beach party.

Now Casino Total, David’s imprint on the Solid Music label, brings us a new classic for 2012. “Oh Boy” marks a change in musical direction, although it does continue Dum Dum Club’s run of setting non-happy lyrics to cheery backing tracks. This time an as of yet unidentified lady tells her lover for the night to take a hike. “Cause boy, it was fun just for a while, you even made me smile and now I realise and see that you’re no good for me”. I’ll tell you what though, there couldn’t be a more swinging way to get shown the door than by hearing this tune! It’s “We No Speak Americano” without the dance bits. It’s Caro Emerald or Lady Linn if they were into cheeky one night stands. It’s awesome.

“Oh Boy” by Dum Dum Club is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“Don’t Go” by Dum Dum Club is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“I’m Sorry” by Dum Dum Club is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music – Part 3

March 19, 2012

There seems to be no stopping the Belgian dance scene at the moment! Less than two weeks after posting a first and second update on the hottest new releases, here’s a third one!

The opening track to this post comes courtesy of Peter Luts, the mastermind behind Lasgo and AnnaGrace. With production and remix duties on many projects, Peter’s days must be jampacked. Yet he still finds the time to take on a solo project of his own and make himself as much of a household name in the charts as he is behind the scenes.

With his new single Peter sets out to top his biggest success to date, top 10 hit “The Rain” featuring the vocals of The Voice Van Vlaanderen contestant Lien Vervoort. Whereas his last release “Cayo” was an instrumental club anthem, Everyday marks a return to (as of yet unidentified) female vocals over those breezy, summery synths we all know and love! The track comes with an appropriately sunny video, although its love interest might surprise you!

Update 21.03.2012: According to CL in the comments to this post, the singer on Peter Luts’s “Everyday” is Chantal Kashala, one of Belgium’s best loved backing vocals!

A surprising addition to the latest dance releases is the return of Rank 1! Over 10 years since their biggest hit in Belgium, trance gem “Such Is Life“, the Dutch DJ duo is prepared to rule the charts once more. On Wild And Perfect Day they’ve teamed up with trance musician Jochen Miller and, surprisingly, Sarah Bettens!

You may remember Sarah as the leading lady of internationally successful Belgian rock group K’s Choice whose “Not An Addict” is probably one of the most iconic songs ever to come out of this country. Sarah’s vocals complement the blast-out-of-your-car-speakers-with-the-top-down-on-a-sun-filled-roadtrip-ness of “Wild And Perfect Day” perfectly.

Lastly, the brand new Sylver single I talked about in my earlier update now comes with a brand new video! Silvy -who’s really rocking that new hair- went to shoot the City Of Angels video in, well, the city of angels! We see her driving around Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive only stopping to ogle a ripped, shirtless man working out. As you do.

“Everyday” by Peter Luts is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“Wild And Perfect Day” by Rank 1 & Jochen Miller ft. Sarah Bettens is available on Spotify and iTunes.
“City Of Angels” by Sylver is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says ARTICLE! Life After Jameerah

July 13, 2011

Tanja Dexters had been trying to make it in the music business for years.

While her early noughties dance cover of ‘Born To Be Wild’ is still her highest charting single to date, she’d never really recovered from a disastrous attempt at Eurovision glory in 2002.

That is until 2008 when this Belgian blonde wanted to prove once and for all that she could sing. The Thomas G:Son penned ‘Addicted To You‘ got her a place in the Eurosong 2008 final and finally kickstarted her musical plans.

Tanja decided to form Jameerah, an international celebrity girl group. Originally called Models & Misses, the group consisted of Tanja, herself Miss Belgium 1998, Belgian Topmodel contestant Elisa Guarraci, Dutch actress Jasmine Sendar and former Miss Germany Nelly Marie Bojahr.

The summer of 2009 saw the release of Jameerah’s first hit. Catchy pop tune ‘All Eyes On Me‘ had previously been recorded by boyband MaddHouse, but with Bill Padley on production duties Tanja & co. were the first to take it to the charts.

After their first single peaked at 25 the girls got themselves another top 50 hit with ‘Stickup‘. Two versions of their sophomore video were made, one for the Les BoyZ remix and one for the main radio edit.

This is where things started falling apart for the foursome. Promotion for ‘Stickup‘ was interrupted by Tanja’s pregnancy. Rather than get on with a third Jameerah single after her maternity leave, their manager got Tanja her own post-baby reality show.

In the end she and manager Dany Peleman could no longer agree on their plans for the future. The two parted ways after eleven years of working together.

Tanja’s first project without a manager was B-A-B-E, somehow short for Blonde Ambition Babes. She was joined by model Griet Vanhees and Lesley-Ann Poppe, best known for her prominent cleavage on the Belgian version of Come Dine With Me. The trio recorded the cheeky ‘(Itsie Bitsie Boe) Geef Maar Lekker Toe!‘. Naughty lyrics, a (literally) homemade choreography and a 2011 beat with some Luv’ influences thrown in for good measure got B-A-B-E a whole lot of press. Sales however were less than stellar and the trio got dropped by their label shortly after.

Still keen on a proper pop career, Tanja was hoping to pick things up with Jameerah where they left them in the summer of 2010. However, since their former manager owns the group name, the four girls were forced to reinvent theirselves.

Tanja, Jasmine, Elisa and Nelly finally decided on the name Fourlicious. New music from the band formerly known as Jameerah isn’t online yet, but their Twitter and Facebook accounts will keep you updated on their progress.

If, however, one fourth of the group is enough to tide you over until the first Fourlicious release then you’re in luck. Elisa Guarraci is making a third foray into solo stardom, having previously been a contestant on Topmodel and Eurosong. On ‘The Last Goodbye‘ the Belgian/Italian singer has teamed up with Philip D, producer of ‘Stickup‘ and the ‘All Eyes On Me’ video edit. Together with David Vervoort, formerly behind Lasgo, he wrote Elisa her own trance anthem.

Elisa really delivers on this ‘When Love Takes Over’ inspired track. I wouldn’t have minded ‘The Last Goodbye‘ being a Fourlicious song one bit. In fact, let’s just edit in some shots of the other girls and BAM, you’ve got your big Fourlicious hit!

Charley says VIDEO! Pearl – Like A Video Game

April 24, 2011

I jumped up out of my seat in excitement when I spotted this!

Nearly a year ago I interviewed dance producer Peter Luts in anticipation of his new talent show Looking For Pearl. A year earlier he’d found a new singer for his best known project, Lasgo, through a similar contest. This time round the goal was to start up something entirely new.

Some well known faces came to audition, Marjolein Lecluyze being one of them. You may remember her as part of the ill-fated group Popz, but she is best known for the music she released in 2006 and 2007. Singles like ‘Luister Naar M’n Hart‘ en ‘Kamer‘ may have been aimed at kids, but with Milk Inc.’s Regi on production duties I can’t deny playing the hell out of these songs.

Another known face was Charlotte Buyl. A couple of years earlier she’d made her first steps in the music business as part of Miss Behave on the Tom Dice season of X Factor. The group lost two members when they were booted out of the competition and after Charlotte decided to quit the band as well, the two remaining members formed Glamm. Free to pursue solo ambitions Charlotte entered Looking For Pearl.

Pearl – Speechless

The two girls made it to the final, with Charlotte taking the prize in the end.

Together with two dancers who were chosen on the show as well, she was now the face of Pearl.

The video for ‘Speechless‘, their very first single, was released soon after the contest ended. The Peter Luts produced dance track did pretty well in the charts, and deservedly so, as Charlotte delivers on the song’s awesome chorus.

Now, about seven months later, Pearl is finally back for music video number two.

Like A Video Game‘ has Charlotte strutting through Movie Park Germany, with none other than Pacman as love interest. The song may take a couple of listens, but will lodge itself firmly into your head.

And one thing’s for sure, it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to those Peter Luts synths.

Charley says POP! is coming back!

March 15, 2011

It’s been way too long, so after a long hibernation due to circumstances Charley says POP! is coming back!

The goal remains the same. It’s not about being the fastest or the most updated, it’s a platform for me to point you towards the world’s finest pop in all its forms. A place where you can come take a look every once in a while to catch up on new releases, old favourites and hidden gems.

And as before, there’s just that little bit of extra attention for the Belgian and Dutch music scene. There’s just too much amazing Benelux pop that would otherwise stay under the radar in the English language blogosphere.

If you’re just joining us, feel free to take a look around in this blog’s history. There’s been posts on pop in the broadest sense of the word, there’s been guest blogs from the likes of The Pipettes and there’s also been interviews with artists ranging from upcoming talent like Susanna Kay and Axeela to international superstars like Lasgo producer Peter Luts and the ever amazing Kat DeLuna.

I am now going to leave you with the above music video of ‘Be With You’ by Tara Lowé, which has no relevance to this post other than that it is a brilliant club track and that I simply like it very very much.

Hope to see you around!

Charley

PS: It has come to my attention that there’s been some major issues with the Charley says POP! e-mail address. It seems that not only in the last couple of weeks, but also in the months that we were still up a lot of things have gone wrong with sending and receiving e-mails.

My sincere apologies if you have been trying to contact me, or if I have contacted you only for the message to ultimately not arrive. I’m trying to get this sorted as soon as possible.

Charley says WEEK! 2010.24

June 20, 2010

Emmène-Moi‘ is one of those songs that I must have listened to so much as a kid, that today I can still sing along to every word of it. And to be honest, I still think it is completely amazing.

Allan Théo is a French singer who hit it big in 1998 with this Frenglish song. He had another French top 10 hit from his debut album with ‘Lola‘. There’s a bit of a depressing tale on Wikipedia of self-financed follow-up projects which had him sell his house, only for it all to go wrong. However, all’s well that ends well, as these days Allan is said to be a banker who is still doing music on the side. His website promises a new album very soon.

Charley says VIDEO! Lasgo – Tonight

June 18, 2010

*sighs*

Oh, Jelle… Don’t ever change. Don’t ever go away. You’re my favourite recent popstar in all of Belgium.

(Don’t worry Katerine Avgoustakis, you’re still my favourite popstar who’s been around for a little longer)

Meanwhile, you can still read my recent interview with Lasgo producer Peter Luts right here on Charley says POP!

Charley says INTERVIEW! Peter Luts

June 1, 2010

The other day I told you about Looking For Pearl, a brand new talent show on Flemish music channel JIM. Similar to 2008’s Let’s Go Lasgo, they will be looking for Belgium’s next big dance singer. However, this time round the search will be on for two dancers as well. Looking For Pearl will be fronted by Lasgo producer Peter Luts, who already has Pearl’s first hit signed internationally and ready to go.

I talked to Peter to find out exactly what he is hoping to find. After the jump you’ll find the full interview, where we also talked about working with former Let’s Go Lasgo finalists, his solo stuff and the upcoming brand new albums for Lasgo and AnnaGrace.

Dutch: Ook voor de originele Nederlandstalige versie van het interview kan je doorklikken!
