Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music – Update

March 14, 2012

Just a couple of days ago I brought you up to speed on everything that’s happening on the Belgian dance scene and already there’s new things for me to report on! So without further ado, an update!

When we last spoke only a preview of Jessy’s 2012 remake of her classic “Innocence” had been online. Now, I can present you the diva’s shiny new video for “Innocence ’12“! Having heard the full thing now, we can assure you that producer Regi has found a way to make Abie Flinstone‘s rap blend in seemlessly with all the things you loved about the original song. And yes, the epic “it feels so good… come on and take me” bit is still there!

Oh, and be sure to compare my earlier write-up of the song with the YouTube description for the “Innocence ’12” video! Someone at Jessy’s label Mostiko must be reading Charley says POP!

There may not be a video for her group Sylver’s new single “City Of Angels” yet, but Silvy De Bie has shot scenes for her latest solo song. The result of that is now on YouTube! Newly redhead Silvy looks gorgeous in the video for “Without You” which is credited to David Latour ft. Sil!

Lastly, here’s one I missed out on in my previous post. You may recognise Elisa Guarraci from her time on Topmodel, her 2008 Eurovision effort or her audition for The Voice Van Vlaanderen. These days though she’s mainly busy with her girlgroup Fourlicious, who are promoting “Over You” and are said to be working with former Lasgo co-producer Dave McCullen on new material.

In between all of that she’s found the time to record “In My Arms“. The song marks the Belgian/Italian singer’s second collaboration with producer Philip D. Earlier the two worked together on the breezy “When Love Takes Over” soundalike “The Last Goodbye“.

So there you go, until further notice, consider yourself updated on the main new releases in Belgian dance music!

“The Ultimate Jessy: Best Of 1995 – 2012″ by Jessy is available on iTunes and Spotify.
“Innocence ’12″ by Jessy ft. Abie Flinstone is available on iTunes.
“Without You” by David Latour ft. Sil is available on iTunes.
“In My Arms” by Philip D ft. Elisa is available soon.

Charley says LIST! Meanwhile In Belgian Dance Music

March 6, 2012

There’s a truckload of new releases from the Belgian dance scene, so why not bring you up to speed in one big post?

Let’s kick things off with AnnaGrace, formerly known as the lady who sang the likes of “Will I?” into the UK top 10 with Ian Van Dahl. Since 2008 Annemie Coenen has reinvented herself as AnnaGrace. She’s had her fair share of club hits, but her main achievement under this new moniker remains “Let The Feelings Go“, which brought her into the Flemish top 5 for the very first time. Now the dance diva is back to kickstart her new album campaign with Ready To Fall In Love. The track doesn’t stray too far from the familiar AnnaGrace sound, but why should it? Annemie’s vocals over those Peter Luts produced beats is exactly what we wanted and it doesn’t disappoint.

Another legend that has been around since the very start is Jessy. She’s been celebrating her legacy in Belgian dance with a best of release, “The Ultimate Jessy: Best Of 1995 – 2012“. Lead by the Kaliq Scott & DJ Rebel featuring “Angel“, this compilation collects the best tracks from Jessy’s time with The Mackenzie, her solo hits and four brand new tracks. As an extra treat for her fans, she’s now given “Innocence“, the biggest The Mackenzie ft. Jessy hit, a 2012 reswizzle. Jessy is joined on Innocence ’12 by Abie Flinstone, Belgium’s upcoming answer to Nicki Minaj. The brand new production comes courtesy of Milk Inc.’s Regi Penxten.

And that’s not all Regi‘s been up to. He’s also teamed up with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. You may remember them from remixes for the likes of Katerine Avgoustakis or “The Way We See The World“, the mindblowing theme song to dance festival Tomorrowland. Their collaboration has resulted in Momentum, an instrumental track that has shot straight into the Flemish top 10 in its first week on the charts.

More male music is brought to us by Danzel who is featured on DJ Rebel‘s new offering. Who’d have thought that almost 10 years after not making it out of the final 50 in Idool 2003 Johan Waem aka Danzel would still be releasing music? His Black & White Brothers cover “Pump It Up” even made it to number 11 in the UK singles chart! The DJ Rebel produced You Make Me Happymashes the feel of “I Gotta Feeling” with Guetta synths while at the same time sounding like vintage Sash!

Silvy De Bie has been a busy lady as well. She’s reportedly filming for her own reality show and has two new singles coming up. The first is a collaboration with David Latour. This Belgian DJ scored himself a dance hit in 2011 with “Venus vs. Mars” and recently remixed girl group About E’s second single. His collaboration with Silvy, under her solo stage name Sil, is called Without You and despite being released on iTunes last month, only a teaser seems to be online for listening so far.

Finally, Silvy’s also been busy recording a new album with Sylver, the band that shot her to international fame with “Turn The Tide“. It’ll be the group’s first new studio album in three years, not counting their 2011 Best Of “Decade“. Last year we were treated to “Stop Feeling Sorry“, a first taste of what’s to come, and now there’s the brand new City Of Angels to whet our appetites even more!

“Ready To Fall In Love” by AnnaGrace is available on iTunes and Spotify.
“The Ultimate Jessy: Best Of 1995 – 2012” by Jessy is available on iTunes and Spotify.
“Innocence ’12” by Jessy ft. Abie Flinstone is available on iTunes.
“Momentum” by Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike & Regi is available on iTunes.
“You Make Me Happy” by DJ Rebel ft. Danzel is available on iTunes.
“Without You” by David Latour ft. Sil is available on iTunes.
“City Of Angels” by Sylver is available on iTunes and Spotify.

Charley says SONG! Yannick Bovy – She’s Even More Beautiful

August 10, 2011

As in previous years, the instore sound system at my summer job is doing a terrific job. While this year’s theme seems to be Beyoncé singles from the ‘4’ era and the odd Spice Girls ballad, one of my favourite musical moments was the reintroduction of Yannick Bovy.

Some time ago I posted how Yannick, who in 2007 recorded ‘Better World Without You‘ with Milk Inc.’s Regi Penxten, was trying to find the right people to help him become a Belgian Bublé. A year later, he’s finally completed that mission.

The demo he’d been working on with songwriters Michael Garvin and Patrick Hamilton got him signed to Universal. The finished result is ‘She’s Even More Beautiful‘, the gorgeous track that’s been making waves at radio stations and, well, my summer job’s instore playlist.

Unfortunately I can only offer you this live rendition radio station JOEfm put up online. However, considering Yannick’s great vocal performance, it might as well have been the studio version.

Charley says VIDEO! Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox vs. Ricky Rivaro ft. Nelson – My Destiny

November 21, 2010

So this is the confusing new Nelson Moraïs single!

Not confusing in its quality, as it’s quite clearly on the amazing side of things, but as to exactly what project this new release belongs.

I introduced you earlier to Nelson, brother of Elsie Moraïs and Eurosong 2008 participant.

Now last Friday he was on Peter Live, singing a medley of ‘Love Me‘, ‘She’s Gone‘ and ‘Stop Playing With My Mind‘. This was the first Nelson surprise of the weekend for me. I’d never realised that it was him doing vocals on that last song!

As I was doing a bit of digging around on the Ultratop site, I stumbled upon ‘My Destiny‘. I assumed it was another old track, but as it turns out it’s a brand new single! Once again it’s produced by Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox, but this time with the help of Ricky Rivaro.

Now here’s where it  gets confusing. Nelson had mentioned after this week’s tv performance that he’s working an album for early next year and that a new single was coming up soon. Would that be ‘My Destiny’ then? One would assume so, but then why doesn’t Nelson get a mention on the single sleeve?

In fact, the credits for Nelson’s entire discography since signing with Mostiko are all over the place!

Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox – Stop Playing With My Mind
Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox ft. Nelson – Love Me
Nelson – She’s Gone
Daniel Bovie & Roy Rox vs. Ricky Rivaro – My Destiny

It’s an OCD iTunes tagger’s ultimate nightmare!

And that’s not even including the two tracks he did for ‘Registrated 2’. ‘Imagination‘ and ‘Now You’re Gone‘ are credited as Regi & Nelson and I can definitely see them popping up on the album. Be it the original versions or, as was the case with Katerine’s ‘Back Off‘, in remixed form.

I guess only time will tell, so as for now let’s just enjoy this rather enjoyable new single and the fact that Nelson’s recording an album. No matter what songs will or will not be included and how they might have to be tagged!

Charley says ARTIST! Yannick Bovy & The North Side Big Band

July 27, 2010

Remember this fine looking specimen of a man?

Yannick Bovy was the only unknown artist to collaborate on Milk Inc. producer Regi’s ‘Registrated’ album.

Three years later, the ‘Better World Without You‘ singer seems to finally be launching a music career of his own.

An article in today’s paper told how Yannick will be performing at Zilverpop festival with his North Side Big Band.

Unfortunately he seems not to be interested in being the next popstar. Yannick declined offers from several managers till he found one who would support him in his dream of being big in, well, big band.

With the likes of ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ on his playlist, it’s sadly unlikely that we’ll be getting a pumping pop anthem from Yannick anytime soon.

However, when he finds the ‘Everything‘ to his Michael Bublé, you’ll surely see Yannick Bovy again on Charley says POP!

Charley says WEEK! 2010.23

June 13, 2010

For some people Vanessa Carlton will always be the ‘A Thousand Miles‘ girl, but there’s more to her than driving a piano through the country.

One of my favourite songs of hers is the lead single to her sophomore album ‘Harmonium‘. Actually, ‘White Houses‘ is probably one of my favourite songs in general. Ever.

While the song tells a clear story, the video is simply Vanessa playing the piano while a second Vanessa is dancing in the same room. At first I felt disappointed by it, but then I figured that this leaves you with the freedom to picture your own faces and settings to the words. In a way, it makes the video more specific than any literal interpretation could have ever been.

White Houses‘ is one of those special songs that can make you nostalgic and yet strangely sad at the same time.

It’s beautiful.

Charley says SONG! Regi ft. Stan Van Samang – Hang On

June 11, 2010

The people over at FIRSTmusic discovered a radio rip of ‘Hang On‘ on YouTube!

The song was produced by Milk Inc.’s Regi and features vocals from Flemish ‘Soapstar Superstar’ winner Stan Van Samang. The ‘Scars‘ singer also had a hand in writing the track. If you’re curious about Stan’s music, be sure to check out his acoustic cover of Madonna’s ‘Ray Of Light

Hang On‘ the new single from Regi’s second collaborations album ‘Registrated 2’. The first one featured the likes of Tom Helsen, Scala and Charley says POP! favourites Katerine Avgoustakis and Kate Ryan. The follow-up will include the single ‘Loaded Gun‘ with Tyler Connolly from Theory Of A Deadman and vocals from Ameerah, Ellektra, former Pussycat Doll Kaya Jones and Turbo B from Snap! The double album with a whopping 26 songs will be released on June 25th.

Charley says VIDEO! Zornik – Scared Of Yourself (Peter Luts Remix)

May 31, 2010

Above is the video to the Peter Luts Remix of ‘Scared Of Yourself’ by Belgian rockers Zornik. It isn’t lead singer Koen Buyse’s only foray into dance music. He also co-wrote a bunch of tracks on Regi from Milk Inc.’s ‘Registrated‘ album and featured on a single from the same project. As far as ‘Scared Of Yourself’ goes, I do recommend also checking out the original version. The remix, amazing as it sounds, doesn’t do justice to the great video which features Koen in drag.

Peter Luts is the producer behind Lasgo and AnnaGrace. You may remember me posting about his solo single ‘The Rain‘ some time ago.

I’m writing about this because I’ve got something exciting coming up tomorrow and it has, in a way, a connection to this. Well, that and because it’s a very good song and a very good remix.

Be sure to check Charley says POP! again tomorrow!

Charley says ARTIST! Farewell Ann Vervoort… (Update)

April 26, 2010

Well I never…

In the wake of Ann Vervoort’s passing FIRSTmusic has uncovered once and for all that it wasn’t actually Ann singing on those early Milk Inc. records. The actual credit goes to a lady that goes by the stage name Sue Price. Google sources aren’t clear on whether her actual name is Karine or Karen Boelaerts.

Sue Price sang on Milk Inc.’s ‘Apocalypse Cow’ album and its singles, but can also be heard on the first Linda fronted single, ‘Land Of The Living‘. Her voice was blended together with Linda’s, I presume to ease in the new sound of the band.

The whole thing isn’t unusual for the 90’s dance scene, but what surprised me most is that this is the same lady who was the session singer for the first few 2 Fabiola singles! Front lady Zohra would do her own vocals on later releases, but anthems like ‘Lift U Up‘ were finished long before she even joined the band. I can’t believe that all these years I didn’t know or notice that early Milk Inc. and early 2 Fabiola were essentially the same person! Then again, I was only about 10 at the time…

Oh and get this, Sue Price was basically running the entire Flemish dance scene on her own as she was also the voice behind Maurizzio’s ‘New Emotion (Here Comes The Rain Again)‘ and various other projects!
