Charley says WEEK! 2010.25

June 28, 2010

Whatever happened to Spooks, best known for their 2001 hits ‘Things I’ve Seen‘ and ‘Karma Hotel‘?

Well, as it turns out they had another album in 2003, but the group disbanded shortly after former member Water Water died in a car accident. Lead singer Ming-Xia is still putting that unique voice to good use working on solo material. Last year she sang on Jurassic 5 frontman Chali 2na’s ‘4 Be Be’ from his debut album ‘Fish Outta Water’.

Charley says VIDEO! Dean – Someday

June 24, 2010

Some time ago I told you how Idool 2007 winner Dean Delannoit was still bravely soldiering on.

At the time the only way to hear the song was to listen to a 30 second preview clip on iTunes. Luckily, the Dean team realised this is no way to run a business and a video for ‘Someday‘ was put up a couple of days ago.

I’m always in awe of videos and tv shows that work brilliantly with light and colours, so I was happy to see Elias Mentzel return on directing duties. The son of Flemish actress Greet Rouffaer had previously been responsible for the dark smouldering video of Dean’s last video ‘My Desire‘. With some help from his production team he managed to give ‘Someday‘ a brilliant look as well.

Idool 2004 finalist Born Crain had some major label hits with ‘Don’t Ever Go‘ and ‘Walking In The Sun‘. Even Japan had a soft spot for the red haired Belgian with the glasses. Earlier this year uplifting pop/rock anthem ‘Tell The World‘ marked his comeback as an independent artist. Born co-wrote the song with Mark Frisch and Anthony Galatis, the people responsible for Katerine’s ‘Here Come All The Boys‘. (By now you’ve probably figured out that I may just as well retitle this blog ‘Six Degrees Of Katerine Avgoustakis’)

Charley says SONG! Dean – Someday

May 27, 2010

Former Idool 2007 and Dancing On Ice winner Dean Delannoit is back with ‘Someday‘, a brand new single just in time to cash in on his presenting gig on Disney Channel.

Dean was never the strongest singer, especially compared to some of the competition he managed to beat, and his first album full of covers wasn’t particularly convincing. His second album ‘Desire’ however was an entirely different story with some proper pop/rock on it. He can even claim a Max Martin writing credit, be it in the form of a Tobias Regner cover.

I’m excited that we might get a third album, even if just for the fact that it may contain a couple of tracks as good as some of the singles on ‘Desire’, the specifics of which I’ll get into another time.

You can hear a sample of ‘Someday’ on Dean’s official website and iTunes, because apparently his people think 30 seconds is all it’s going to take to get people to buy it. I’ll let you decide for yourself if that’s the case.

Charley says ARTIST! Yasmina Karraz aka Yazzmin

May 24, 2010

As far as wasted opportunities in Belgian pop go, Yasmina Karraz is a prime example.

Aged 19 Yasmina entered Eurosong 2002 in a bid to represent Belgium in Tallinn. ‘Take This Heart‘ took Flanders by storm. Yasmina was hailed as a new Alicia Keys and despite ending third behind Sergio & The Ladies and Spark her Eurovision entry climbed its way up to number 8 in the charts.

The ballad isn’t up on YouTube, but you can hear a sample of it on the Ultratop website or listen to the full thing on Grooveshark.

Big things were expected from this young singer. An album was planned and it looked like Yasmina would kickstart the Flemish R&B scene, but then… nothing.

After a couple of years wheels were finally getting set into motion. In 2004 Yasmina provided backing vocals on ‘Same Tears‘, an indie album track by rapper Krewcial. The laidback hiphop tune was an ode to his grandfather who had passed away. Yasmina was also involved with The Incredible Time Machine, singing on their charity single ‘People Have The Power‘.

2005 saw the rise of Chocolate Nation, a Flemish R&B collective fronted by Leki, Hadise and record label Mostiko. A new Yasmina song, ‘Song 4 You‘, can be found on a compilation themed around this. The Chocolate Nation album must be nearly impossibe to find these days, but you can hear the song online.

That year also saw the first appearence of the new moniker under which she would be releasing music. As Yazzmin she sang the chorus on ‘No Matter What‘ from Leki’s ‘Warrior Girl‘ album.

A full-on Yazzmin launch was planned for 2006, with even a rumoured return to the Eurosong stage. Unfortunately, Yasmina decided to pull the plug on the project for personal reasons.

She hasn’t been in the public eye since.

Shame.

2012 edit: Since posting this blog, some links are no longer working. “Take This Heart” has however been uploaded onto YouTube by some kind soul. Enjoy it while it’s still there!

May 20, 2010

Together with two of my favourite Eurovision fanatics I’ll be taking a closer look at this year’s Eurovision hopefuls. Over the next week we’ll be rating every country and we’ll give our own take on it in a tweet, i.e. in 140 characters or less.

Now, let’s meet my co-judges:

MadeInHeaven: A British resident of the Popjustice forum.
Greg Baker: Our impartial American voice of reason.

Today we’ll be taking a closer look at Portugal, FYR of Macedonia, Belarus and Iceland!
