Charley says ARTIST! Dum Dum Club

March 25, 2012

Dum Dum Club is a side project of David Vervoort.

You probably know him best as co-producer and songwriter of Lasgo’s first two albums. In recent years he’s ventured into writing and producing for all kinds of genres, from pop (Fourlicious‘ new tracks) to schlager (most notably the epic “Dos Cervezas” by Tom Waes). David has also had chart success of his very own, with “B*tch” being his biggest hit to date under the moniker Dave McCullen. With the line “I just like to call you my bitch” as the song’s catchy hook and a brilliant video of old people raving to his dance beats, the track got to number 6 back in 2004.

In 2009 David created the first Dum Dum Club release. “I’m Sorry” was a cheerful little pop tune that sees a lover apologising for what he’s done wrong in the hope of getting back together. As he did with the odd Lasgo album track David provided the vocals himself. In the video however he’s nowhere to be seen, with a group of his friends taking to the stage instead. Among them you may recognise former Lasgo singer Evi Goffin, Edmée and Flor from DHT ft. Edmée and Temptation Island contestant turned singer Reshum Van Til!

I have to admit that Dum Dum Club’s second single kind of passed me by when it was first released. “Don’t Go” came out in 2010 and sadly all traces of it seem to have vanished from YouTube since. It is however available on Spotify, where you can hear David’s sad tale of lost love set to summer-y reggae-light beats. Think crying into your cocktail at a beach party.

Now Casino Total, David’s imprint on the Solid Music label, brings us a new classic for 2012. “Oh Boy” marks a change in musical direction, although it does continue Dum Dum Club’s run of setting non-happy lyrics to cheery backing tracks. This time an as of yet unidentified lady tells her lover for the night to take a hike. “Cause boy, it was fun just for a while, you even made me smile and now I realise and see that you’re no good for me”. I’ll tell you what though, there couldn’t be a more swinging way to get shown the door than by hearing this tune! It’s “We No Speak Americano” without the dance bits. It’s Caro Emerald or Lady Linn if they were into cheeky one night stands. It’s awesome.

“Oh Boy” by Dum Dum Club is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says ARTIST! David Vervoort (Formerly Of Lasgo)

May 16, 2010

I wasn’t really planning on writing another post today, but I was just watching ‘Tomtesterom’ and guess which former Lasgo member was on it?

‘Tomtesterom’ sees host Tom Waes attempting a different challenge each week. He’s tamed wild horses, ran the exhausting Marathon des Sables and this week… he had to become a schlager singer.

Helping him along the way was songwriter David Vervoort, who you may remember as one third of old school Lasgo!

Together with producer Peter Luts he was responsible for dance classics like ‘Something‘. Every once in a while he could even be heard on an album track or two. Most notably, he sang on the album version of ‘Who’s That Girl’, though his vocals got replaced by Dave Beyer’s for the single release.

David had projects on the side as well. For example, back in 2003 he co-wrote the amazing ‘Be With You‘ for the now long forgotten dance singer Tara Lowé. Last year he released a pleasant little tune called ‘I’m Sorry‘ which, despite a couple of celebrity cameos in the video, failed to make an impact on the charts. His biggest solo success came in 2004 when he released ‘B*tch‘ as Dave McCullen. Aided by a video full of OAPs partying at a nightclub, the song became a top 10 smash and even managed to become somewhat of an international hit.

As far as I know David isn’t involved in the current Lasgo reboot. It seems that instead he’s now mainly a schlager songwriter! With the likes of Christoff, Nathalie Tané and schlager queen Laura Lynn recording his songs, David seemed the perfect guy for Tom Waes to turn to for his very own hit single.

Together they came up with the cheesy but catchy ‘Dos Cervezas‘. You can watch the full video here. If you listen carefully you can hear David doing backing vocals. It looks like the song might even go beyond tonight’s show as it’s already at number 2 on the iTunes chart.

Charley says VIDEO! Peter Luts ft. Lien Vervoort – The Rain

April 30, 2010

I love stuff like this. Radio station Q-Music has discovered that the singer on Peter Luts’ ‘The Rain‘ is Lien Vervoort. The name may not immediately ring a bell, but this lady has been on our radar before.

She first stepped into the spotlight as a contestant on the ill-fated talent show ‘Can You Duet‘. She didn’t manage to secure a place in the final, but a couple of months later she was already competing in her next reality show.

‘Let’s Go Lasgo’ saw producer Peter Luts looking for a girl to be the new lead singer of early 00’s hit dance group Lasgo. If I remember correctly Lien walked out of the competition in the end, because she didn’t feel like it was the kind of thing she wanted after all. Current Flemish ‘Dancing With The Stars‘ contestant Jelle Van Dael ended up beating Elke, another ‘Can You Duet’ alum, in the talent search’s final and Lasgo shot back to the top of the charts.

When the time came for Peter to release another solo single on the side he hadn’t forgotten about Lien. She may not be in the video, but Lien’s vocals are an integral of the song’s success. With ‘The Rain‘ entering the top 10 everything has finally fallen into place for everyone. Don’t you love a happy end?
