Charley says VIDEO! Iana – Predator

April 2, 2012

If you haven’t checked out ‘Predator‘ by Iana yet, it’s about time you did!

The track is a proper pop anthem with blips and bleeps by producer Andras “Eightysix” Vleminckx, the guy behind ‘Dance Bailalo‘ and other Kat DeLuna tracks. While this country has plenty of strong female vocalists, Iana finally fills the void for that one Belgian full-on ‘pop’ popstar.

And she doesn’t come unprepared! For years Iana, real name Jana De Valck, has been perfecting her craft as a backing singer. In fact, back in 2010 I dedicated a (looking back on it, rather rambling) blog post to the then-unidentified mystery backing vocalist who is now set to take the pop scene by storm herself!

She has a record contract with Universal Music Belgium to her name, is busy promoting ‘Predator’, will be part of the upcoming JIM reality series ‘#Girlz’ and is working with BabL, the producer who gave Sandrine’s ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ cover its shiny pop gloss.

At one point Jana was in the running to become the new lead singer of Hooverphonic, even appearing in the teaser video for ‘The Night Before’, but with everything she’s got going for her now, I doubt Jana is still losing any sleep over being beaten to the job!

‘Predator’ by Iana is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Charley says SONG! Hooverphonic – Happiness

February 17, 2012

Hooverphonic have been going from strength to strength ever since Noémie Wolfs was announced as the group’s new leading lady. The album “The Night Before” was awarded double platinum, the lead single of the same name dominated airwaves for months and the band won both a Radio 2 Zomerhit and MIA Award.

Now, after the final single from ‘The Night Before”, an amazing limited edition deluxe re-issue of debut album “A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular”, Noémie filling in for Kimbra on some of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” performances and Hooverphonic producer and mastermind Alex Callier being a coach on The Voice Van Vlaanderen, the group is ready for their next step.

(There, completely up to date on Hooverphonic in just three run-on sentences!)

In March and April the group is set to amaze Belgium with “Hooverphonic with Orchestra” at the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerp. Due to popular demand extra dates have been added, so be quick for a seat! Alex himself came up with the idea of an orchestral album to tie in with these performances. The album, due on March 9th, will contain brand new studio recordings of the best Hooverphonic tracks with an orchestral arrangement and Noémie singing! And yes, that includes the classic “Mad About You“!

Fans are also treated to “Happiness“, the new original track from “Hooverphonic with Orchestra” that was just released to iTunes and Spotify. The lovely track has a certain warmth to it that just makes me want to wrap the song around me like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. You know, if that were possible.

“Happiness” by Hooverphonic is now available on iTunes and Spotify.

Charley says COVER! Hooverphonic / Ellektra – Identical Twin

November 26, 2010

Hooverphonic managed to do the unthinkable. They found a worthy replacement for Geike Arnaert!

New singer Noémie Wolfs immediately made an impact as the superb new single ‘The Night Before‘ shot into the top 3 in no time.

An album with the same name was released today and I’m sure it’s set to top the charts.

Now what surprised me when checking out the album samples on 7Digital, is that one of the tracks is a cover!

Yes, they previously released their own take on classics like ‘This Strange Effect‘, but this new track was only just released earlier this year! By Soapstar Superstar alum Eline De Munck no less!

Identical Twin‘ was first released last February on ‘More Is More‘, the debut album of Eline’s musical alter ego Ellektra. An album that spawned the best first three singles run of any Belgian pop artist this year, if I might add.

But why would Hooverphonic cover an Ellektra album track? The answer’s in the writing credits. Hooverphonic mastermind Alex Callier penned the song himself! With the help of none other than Cathy Dennis!

Now that we have that cleared up, the question remains… Which of these twin songs do you like best?
