Charley says VIDEO! Hadise – Biz Burdayız

June 16, 2012

New Hadise! The Belgian Idool 2003 hopeful turned Eurovision finalist turned Turkish superstar starts off her next album campaign with “Biz Burdayız“. With this song and video the Charley says POP! favourite seems to have gone more urban than ever before.

I’ve only listened through the song once at this point, so I can’t really offer any major pop insights, but, you know, I’m just happy there’s new Hadise music and that I know about it. I’d completely missed her last Turkish album campaign until the ever amazing Mike over at Pop Trash Addicts posted about it. Always awkward when you’re supposed to be “that Belgian pop guy” and you don’t even know something’s been released…

I don’t want this post to be all “COME BACK TO BELGIUM HADISE”, but then again, yeah, kind of. Look, Hadise is a kind and talented girl, so I wish her all the international success in the world. And, I mean, when presented with the choice of being A-list in the giant Turkish community or fighting an uphill battle in the Belgian pop scene, it’s pretty clear where your priorities would lie. So I’ll be supporting Hadise’s foreign endeavours and if I have to resort to random German eBay importers for a physical copy of her next pop gem then I will. But deep inside I’ll quietly be counting down the days for Hadise’s triumphant return to Belgium, even if just for one more glorious English album, just to show them lessers how it’s done.

I’ll be waiting, Hadise.

“Biz Burdayız” by Hadise is available… in Turkey.

PS: Just because it wouldn’t be a Charley says POP! Hadise post without it, let’s watch that clip of her 2006 TMF Awards performance again, shall we?

Charley says ARTICLE! Romy & Marjon, The Forgotten 2 Unlimited Members

August 3, 2011

The year was 1998. It had been about two years since the departure of Ray and Anita left 2 Unlimited without its two singers. The people behind the scenes, however, were not going to let a good brand go to waste.

Enter Romy and Marjon. Two Dutch girls who had some pretty big shoes to fill and a legendary dance group to carry on with. Despite sounding more pop than ever before, the relaunched 2 Unlimited managed to make an impact with ‘Wanna Get Up‘. Two more singles, ‘Never Surrender‘ and ‘Edge Of Heaven‘, were to follow, taking the group back to their club roots.

Unfortunately, this failed to boost album sales. The patchy ‘II’ only spent four weeks in the charts. The number 55 peak was even more disappointing considering the last studio album of the original line-up had been their second to hit number one. Despite their releases doing slightly better in Belgium, 2 Unlimited 2.0 would not live to see the year 1999.

Now this is where today’s post comes in. If, like myself, you find yourself on a rainy Wednesday morning wondering what Romy and Marjon are up to, worry no more. It pleases me to say that both are still doing what they love, if maybe not on the world stage 2 Unlimited gave them. Rumours of a reunion under the name ‘2’ or ‘II’ aside, both have been keeping busy with solo endeavours.

Marjon van Iwaarden seems to have moved in a more jazz oriented direction. Her website lists the many projects and live bands she’s involved in, as well as informing us of her work as a vocal coach.

Romy Snoeijers turns out to be a hardworking lady as well these days. As a voice-over she’s done commercials for the likes of Disney and DKNY. On top of that she’s working as a model, doing corporate film productions and tv hosting. Finally, her site has an entire section on her music career with audio samples to bring you up to speed.

Romy’s post-2 Unlimited highlight is surely ‘Don’t Break My Heart‘. In October of 2004 the TMF Awards needed an official anthem. Romy teamed up with Dutch DJ Cor Fijneman on what was to be the opening act of the night. The song may only have managed a spot on the Belgian Bubbling Under chart, but even just the slightly distorted “Don’t go breaking my heeeaaarrrt baaaaaabe” at 1:47 is enough to make it a hidden gem in my books.

Charley says ARTIST! Simon Sinnaeve

October 1, 2010

Because every self respecting tv channel needs its own talent show, TMF launched Wanna Sing? in 2007.

The Flemish music channel used the same concept as it did for Rate The Video and Rate The VJ. While each contestant does their bit, viewers get to text in their comments and a score from 0 to 10. The person with the highest average score gets to progress.

The show attracted some familiar faces like Popstars and Eurosong 2008 contestant Kenza. Also taking part was Miss Belgian Beauty finalist Tamara Opdebeeck, who was already recording as Noa Neal and went on the be the runner-up in ‘K2 Zoekt K3’ in 2009.

However, there can only be one winner and for Wanna Sing? that was Simon Sinnaeve.

The West-Flemish boy won a performance at the TMF Awards and got to release ‘Your Eyes‘.

Simon Sinnaeve, popstar and Belgium’s first national beerpong champion.

While the song isn’t particularly spectacular, I do love this pop/rock-ish tune. It’s refreshing to have a winner’s single that sounds current enough, fits the singer well and has a lovely looking video. Three points not many Belgian talent show debuts manage to tick off!

Wanna Sing? being on a small channel may not have stopped the product from being a bit amazing, but it did mean few people got to know about Simon’s music career. ‘Your Eyes‘ unfortunately never made it out of the Bubbling Under chart.

With no plans for a second single at Universal, Simon took to MySpace profiles and various YouTube accounts to have his voice be heard. An overview of his many projects can be found here on what I’m assuming is his personal MySpace.

Earlier this year he uploaded a video onto the SonicAngel and Joepie Talent Booth site. A girl by the name of Laura van den Bruel beat him to the top spot of the competition, but does this video shot at the SonicAngel studios indicate that Tom Dice’s label has a spot ready for Simon?

We may still be waiting for news on his music, but Simon was in the papers just a couple of days ago! What for? He hosted and won the very first Belgian beerpong championship.

That was a bit random.

Charley says INTERVIEW! Kat DeLuna

June 8, 2010

They say never to meet your heroes, but boy am I glad I did get to talk to Kat DeLuna!

This Dominican born, American raised popstar’s 2008 album ‘9 Lives’ marked the start of the pop/R&B craze that has taken over the charts since. ‘Whine Up‘ and ‘Run The Show‘ were huge and songs like the amazing ‘In The End‘ proved that there was more to the album than just the first two singles.

I got a chance to talk to Kat about ‘Push Push’, the first single from her second album ‘Inside Out’. Kat was brilliant to interview. We ended up having more of a conversation rather than a dry Q&A. Read all about meeting producers over social network sites, sampling songs she’s loved since fifth grade and even covering Celine Dion after the jump!

Charley says WEEK! 2010.19

May 16, 2010

Move over, Jasper Erkens and Freaky Age. Here’s Breathe The Sound! Above is lead singer Simon Nuytten. Below is their song ‘Dance‘. Over here is a live cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man In The Mirror‘. And this is the band’s MySpace profile. This isn’t usually my kind of music, but I find myself liking this quite a bit.

Charley says LIST! 3 Unlikely Yet Rather Amazing Samples

May 15, 2010

1. Song: Lumidee – Insomnia
Sample: Faithless – Insomnia
About: The Queen of Spanish Harlem is back! Over the past few years Lumidee has been making sure that’s she’s not going to be the ‘Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)‘ girl for the rest of her life. I’m particularly fond of her Speedy collaboration ‘Sientelo‘. (“Classy, but sexy without no tongue ring […] Straight from the gutter, but I shine like a pearl”) With a cheeky “They say God is a DJ” added, this new song is the best use of ‘Insomnia’ since the 2003 TMF Awards opening performance.

2. Song: The Crybabies – Wherever I Go
Sample: Zombie Nation – Kernkraft 400
About: Looks like someone Eva Simons’ed Eva Simons herself! The former ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ winner shot to international fame when ‘Silly Boy‘ was leaked as a Lady Gaga and Rihanna demo. ‘Wherever I Go‘ just hit the web as Eva’s alleged new single. However, a little digging revealed that it’s actually The Crybabies who get to take credit for it!

3. Song: Auburn – La La La
Sample: ATC – Around The World (La La La La La)
About: Auburn, formerly known as Gabby G, is already being dubbed the Princess of Beluga Heights. J.R. Rotem seems to be on a roll when it comes to sampling. After Jason Derülo’s Imogen Heap-sampling ‘Whatcha Say‘ he turned the cheesy (yet nonetheless amazing) ‘Around The World (La La La La La)‘ by German pop group ATC into a proper R&B tune.
