Charley says ARTIST! Yasmina Karraz aka Yazzmin

May 24, 2010

As far as wasted opportunities in Belgian pop go, Yasmina Karraz is a prime example.

Aged 19 Yasmina entered Eurosong 2002 in a bid to represent Belgium in Tallinn. ‘Take This Heart‘ took Flanders by storm. Yasmina was hailed as a new Alicia Keys and despite ending third behind Sergio & The Ladies and Spark her Eurovision entry climbed its way up to number 8 in the charts.

The ballad isn’t up on YouTube, but you can hear a sample of it on the Ultratop website or listen to the full thing on Grooveshark.

Big things were expected from this young singer. An album was planned and it looked like Yasmina would kickstart the Flemish R&B scene, but then… nothing.

After a couple of years wheels were finally getting set into motion. In 2004 Yasmina provided backing vocals on ‘Same Tears‘, an indie album track by rapper Krewcial. The laidback hiphop tune was an ode to his grandfather who had passed away. Yasmina was also involved with The Incredible Time Machine, singing on their charity single ‘People Have The Power‘.

2005 saw the rise of Chocolate Nation, a Flemish R&B collective fronted by Leki, Hadise and record label Mostiko. A new Yasmina song, ‘Song 4 You‘, can be found on a compilation themed around this. The Chocolate Nation album must be nearly impossibe to find these days, but you can hear the song online.

That year also saw the first appearence of the new moniker under which she would be releasing music. As Yazzmin she sang the chorus on ‘No Matter What‘ from Leki’s ‘Warrior Girl‘ album.

A full-on Yazzmin launch was planned for 2006, with even a rumoured return to the Eurosong stage. Unfortunately, Yasmina decided to pull the plug on the project for personal reasons.

She hasn’t been in the public eye since.

Shame.

2012 edit: Since posting this blog, some links are no longer working. “Take This Heart” has however been uploaded onto YouTube by some kind soul. Enjoy it while it’s still there!

Charley says VIDEO! D1ce – BoyToy

May 21, 2010

Belgium’s bad boy of R&B is back!

Redwan El Bakkali was one of the singles on Flemish Temptation Island 2009. He had hoped the show would launch him as a popstar, but a stay in prison nipped his music career as D1ce in the bud.

There is a debut song called ‘Hold Up‘ online though. There’s several versions and videos out there, but my favourite is the one below. If I remember correctly it’s produced by Serge Ramaekers.

A year later, D1ce is back with ‘BoyToy‘. The video was uploaded a couple of hours ago and it’s good to see a proper slick R&B video coming out of Flanders. We may be responsible for the likes of Hadise and Leki, but the genre still has a lot of catching up to do here.

The song itself fits nicely into the current pop influenced R&B that’s popular around the world these days. I particularly like the start of the chorus which has Redwan pleading “I can be your boytoy, unwrap me in your toy store…”
