Charley says WEEK! 2010.24

June 20, 2010

Emmène-Moi‘ is one of those songs that I must have listened to so much as a kid, that today I can still sing along to every word of it. And to be honest, I still think it is completely amazing.

Allan Théo is a French singer who hit it big in 1998 with this Frenglish song. He had another French top 10 hit from his debut album with ‘Lola‘. There’s a bit of a depressing tale on Wikipedia of self-financed follow-up projects which had him sell his house, only for it all to go wrong. However, all’s well that ends well, as these days Allan is said to be a banker who is still doing music on the side. His website promises a new album very soon.

Charley says VIDEO! Jaap – Don’t Stop Believin’

June 16, 2010

Just like last year when Lisa Lois released a cover of ‘Hallelujah’ inspired by Alexandra Burke, the 2010 winner of Dutch ‘X Factor’ took some inspiration from the British version of the show.

Britain’s Joe McElderry may have ended up with ‘The Climb‘ as his debut single, but it was ‘Don’t Stop Believin’‘ which was his unofficial anthem. Multiple versions ended up storming the charts, which makes it all the more stupid of Simon Cowell not to cash in on that with Joe. I mean, if it was a case of giving him an unfair advantage in the final, they could have just had Olly and Stacey have a previously performed song of their own as their personal winner’s songs?

Anyway, as I was saying, the producers of ‘X Factor’ in The Netherlands picked up on this success and gave the Journey song to Jaap Reesema. Judge Gordon was a bit skeptical about the choice, but it ended up winning Jaap the final and getting to number one.

A video for ‘Don’t Stop Believin’‘ has just been released, which might help the song climb back up the charts after it fell to number six in its second week. I like the thing with the people getting labels, but I can’t help but wonder if these people know they’ll be on Dutch television with the tag ‘nerd’ and ‘lazy’ next to their head? The video was shot here in Belgium and I love how beautifully they managed to show our nation’s capital. They even made the inside of the gritty Brussel North station look glamorous!

Oh, and if you were wondering where you might recognise Jaap from… At one point he was a member of Hermes House Band who had a UK top 10 hit with their cover of ‘Country Roads‘!

Charley says SONG! Whatever – Scream

May 8, 2010

Looks like it’s going to be a Guitar Saturday today!

Whatever picks things up exactly where Aly & AJ 78violet left it. ‘Scream‘ is equal parts catchy female pop/rock vocals and roaring guitars.

The song is the first single from Eva Treurniet and Nathalie Bulters. The girls made it to the semi-final of last year’s X Factor in The Netherlands, where their crazy teenage personalities won the hearts of the Dutch viewers.

Oh and disregard the extra song tacked on the end of the YouTube video above. For some reason this year’s X Factor finalists’ song ‘You’re The Voice‘ is on there as well.

Edit: The original video I posted seems to have been removed. I’ve replaced it with the best quality I could find on YouTube, unfortunately that’s not saying much.

Edit: The official video is now up!
